currently i feel i have a very good setup but now i have a 24" monitor i have a niggling voice telling me my 2 4870's 512mb aren't powerful enough for the 1920x1080 resolution i now have.

A few comments i've read on here have stated that 512mb isn't enough and it will struggle playing my games at full whack. I'm yet to test this theory fully as i only installed it last night.

I've found somewhere which are selling the Sapphire 4890 Vapour X edition for £150 so i'm tempted to sell my two and get two of those.

what are peoples thoughts on this?

hi,

sorry i cant give you any direct advice, but wondered if you could tip me off as the where you have seen those cards at 150, im on the hunt myself at the moment and that card appears to be a contender

the 4870 especially in xfire will be powerfull enough for everything but crysis and other insane games at 1080p.

Would suggest that there is not 'so' much of a worthwhile upgrade right this minute - based on the alleged new ATI cards being imminent.
Now I am not normally one to preach the 'wait and see what is just about to arrive' spiel, but in this case I think there may be some value in hanging fire for a few weeks. No doubt that 2x 4890 will be an improvement, but for the outlay it might just be worth a short wait ?

yeah that's fair comment. Was just seeing the 4890 being so cheap it was a good buy. but then again it'll be even cheaper once new cards arrive. Especially if the cost is too much on launch

I think you need to actually test the performance for yourself ;)

I run a single Sapphire 4870 512mb at stock speeds at 1920 x 1200 on my 24" and have no complaints whatsoever :) You'd need to be looking at resolutions higher than that with some hefty AA and AF to really "need" crossfire cards.

I would save your money and wait for the next round of cards.

I used to run a single 4850 512mb @1920x1080 and it ran almost all games maxed out with a bit of AA, there was a big jump in performance when i brought a 4870x2 i cant imagine why you'd need anymore?

I recommend that you go out and spend as much money as you can on graphics cards immediately.

From my perspective you have not one but two completely compelling reasons to do so.

1. A niggling voice telling you that girls are sniggering behind your back at your lack of firepower in the graphics department
2. A few people telling you that 512mb will hold you back in life!

So what are you waiting for...get cracking! Ignore these muppets telling you to wait.

Once you have spent the money you will feel a lot better...100% guaranteed. At least until new stuff comes out...but that won't be for years.
