I currently have an E6750 with a P35 board by Gigabyte. with 8Gb of DDR2.

Now I am thinking of going for a Q9450, with a Asus P5Q Pro Turbo board. This should last me a good 18 months, when I clock it with the True 120 on top of it.

Good idea or not

Do you do anything that needs more than two cores?

I'd be inclined to get the q9550 and stick with the current motherboard, the q9450's seem to top out around 3.4ghz. P45 clocks quads better than P35, but probably not by enough to buy a new board

v 8gb of ram suggests probably not a gamer, though he may well be

Unless you do use a lot of multi-threaded apps and want to get rendering/encoding times down, etc i'd just overclock what you've got and get a better graphics card for now. You won't see a great deal of performance difference in single-threaded apps and gaming in general over what you've already got to be honest. Or at least thats what i found with my q9550. If you really want a quad though a q9550 would be a good choice or a second hand q6600 or q6700.

I do a bit of gaming, which is why i have a 4850, but also do a lot of vm ware stuff, for testing stuff. Also have a full domain at home, being an MS partner have a full exchange setup at home.
