Is it worth me switching to vista? Setup is:

A64 3000+
2gig ram
250gb hdd
X800GTO2

I have a copy of Vista Business. PC is for general use and games. Also run a Windows Server 2003 AD domain

Would people recommend switching to Vista or sticking to XP?

I'd run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor first to make sure your hardware/software is compatible.

I upgraded to Vista Home Premium x64 last week as I wanted 4GB RAM and so far I'm happy. Everything I want to use with Vista works fine but there's nothing really new in Vista and if I didn't want to move to x64 I probably would have stayed with XP. Having said now that I have upgraded I wouldn't move back - I do like the look and feel of it.

I would read a lot of the threads regarding why people are leaving Vista and putting XP back on.

I would look at their reasons for doing so, see if anything they have problems with such as the vista DRM taking up so much CPU, is going to be a problem for me.

Then I would make my mind up.

Stick to XP. Vista gaming performance is lower, Vista is more resource hungry, and driver support isn't upto XP yet.

I would wait until SP1, even then I would still stick to XP until security updates are no longer released.

TOTAL BULL!

if you have to ask, then vista is not for you. people who upgrade are people who want to without asking the opinions of others. you know damn well your hardware specs are more than powerful enough. the choice is yours. :)

but it doesn't help when people lie like like this....

this has no basis in reality whatsoever....

Not true - I've seen this myself but its easily worked around by not using WMP.

I like that answer, and i agree to it, i think it's down to trying it yourself, if it goes well then leave it, if not u can always revert back. It's doing fine for me, although im yet to play any games on it....

Hang on?

What I was saying was:

a) A lot of people appear to be ditching their vista installations in favour of going back to Vista
b) I was then saying have a look at their reasons for doing so
c) I was then saying he should make up his own mind based on that research

So what part do you mean has no basis in reality ? unless you mean the well documented problem with the mfpmp.exe?

I wasnt saying Vista is pants DONT DO IT!!!!!!111111

I wasnt even saying I had used Vista!!

I was saying, have a read through some of the problems people have been having, then make your own mind up.

Man some people eh!

I upgraded from XP and it's been absolutely fine on my computer. I have even been gaming without any problems. I had loads of comments from people who haven't even tried Vista who told me not to upgrade.
My copy of Vista was a free upgrade anyway, but I would happily of paid for it.

Try it yourself!

vista isn't more resource hungry, it uses resources differently to XP(there is no point having resources just sitting there not being used) so vista uses them till something else needs them, then it releases them.
also if you wait till XP security updates are no longer released, it will be years before you upgrade

My new laptop has Vista Ultimate on it and apart from driver issues i quite like it tbh. Seems to run pretty smooth to me, got all the gubbins running etc.

My spec on the laptop is:

Intel Duo Core 2.33ghz cpu
2gb of 667mhz ram
160gb 7200 rpm sata hd

Like i said it runs perfectly fine and the more i use it the more i like it. Just have certain driver issues which im hoping in time will be rectified.

If all your hardware and software checks out as being Vista compatible, go for it. In many cases Vista is better than XP and the upgrade is very beneficial.

I changed back from Vista to XP because Vista doesn't allow me as much support as XP does when it comes to three monitors and direct x cards.

However this isn't a problem with Vista of such, it's me having fairly old hardware in places and having some software not quite ready for Vista yet.

I'll upgrade to Vista in about 6-8 months probably.
