Should i wait for the BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 512MB (GX-030-BG) at £234.94?
Its on preorder, i don't know when its due.

I need a new graphics card to power a Dell 2407 which has a v high resolution. So i was looking for a 512mb card. This is the only 512mb card which isn't a GTX (appart from the EVGA one), so i was considering it.

Should i wait for the BFG?
or Would a 256 GT do?
or Would a 512GTX be needed?

Im a nvidia fan, so i've disregarded the ATI's

Thanks.

yuo really need to consider ati, theres better stuff over the dark side! You can get a X1900XT for that money and its a lot better.

For that money and nVIDIA I would be looking at the eVGA 7900GT Superclocked version. But for that money and no brand bias it would be an X1900XT. :)

Now now, i don't want this to become another one of those Nvidia vs ATI threads. ;)

However,
Things i resent about ATI:
They use more power...
They generate too much heat
To go XFire you need special cards Masters and Slaves.
Nvidia have good linux drivers, whereas ATI don't.
and do they support shader model 3 yet???

If you want to cook the contents of your pc then buy a 7900GT

Sorry couldn't resist the slight modification to the quote :p

Seriously though how does a X1900XT cook the inside of your pc when it unlike the 7900GT exhausts the hot air out of the case.

But for the money the current best buy is the X1800XT for £153 or the X1900XT's that are available for £230ish. Quicker than a 7900GT for the same price, its a no brainer to me.

Yup ATi do suppport SM3.0, cant believe your going for the 7900 GT when you can get the much better x1900 for the same price, the x1900 is equivalent to the 7900 GTX lol, plud theres the fact that 7900's are all borked, good luck, your goig to need it. :D

As said also you could get the x1800 XT for only £152, even thats faster than the 7900 GT. :p

Hey my 7900GT is fine...

Except the fan broke and now I have a 120mm fan being held against it with Polos as support barriers.

This Week Only there's a HIS X1900 XT with ICEQ 3 - no more worries about heat! It's £240 and is super zippy, should overclock nice too. Exhuast helps lower the ambient temps of the case too.

If your issues with linux drivers, power and crossfire still stand though I guess the 7900GT OC is good (as long as it doesn't fail on you!), but without that overclock it's only as powerful as the £150 X1800 XT.

I know it may feel like you're getting mobbed by evil ATi employees right now, but at the moment OcUK's prices mean they're the best value for money. :)

Hey I'm not an ATi employee, I'm an nVIDIA fanboy.

But the fact of the matter is, for £230 you can get an X1900XT which beats the 7900GT to the ground.. Even if the 7900GT worked it still wouldn't keep up. But for sheer value at the moment.. The X1800XT 256MB is the king. :) You will NOT find a better value card on the web.

You're very level-headed and reasonable for a fanboy! ;) :D But those prices are just too good to miss. It made me buy the whole rig in my sig, bye bye savings. :(

Yeah i've been reading all the bad reviews of dodgey 7900's

Was hoping the new BFG wouldn't suffer from the same fate.
I really need a new gfx card, and considering nividia was my the only option for me i wasn't left with much choice other than a 7900

However, I am considering one of the ATI's...

Why thank you.

I suppose its more of a preference tbh. If there was an ATi and an nVIDIA that both cost the same, performed the same and were as reliable as one another then it would be the nVIDIA everytime. But who can argue with the truth? The X1900XT and X1800XT are the best value cards out, and offer the best value of any cards in a long long time.

Your Dell is screaming for an X1900! At that price, you'd be silly to opt for a 7900GT, even if it is overclocked with 512mb. :p

If you do want to go for a 7900 you'd be safer with an EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GT KO Superclock 256MB as it is supposed to have different memory which addresses the failures common to the 7900 series and I doubt the 512mb will even make any difference even for the 24" Dell. Theres a good review on bit-tech.net which compares it to the X1900XT.

Agree with above, EVGA have tryed to adress the problems with the 7900GT cards. All brands have the problem in which some cards it effects,

Ive RMA'd 2 XFX cards now and ive decided to stick with the 7800Series as im tired of this bull.
