Should I wait for the new CPU?

Hey All,

Quick question, I am close to finishing my order and was just stuck with the idea of waiting for the new cpus due in Jan! Do you think it would be worth waiting 1 month for them or just order the Q6600 quad?

Reason I ask is im terrible for being patient but would wait if its the best thing (I plan to OC either way)

lol.. I was thinking about ordering new mobo, ram, gfx and cpu... then I found out the new x48 mobos will be out Q1 2008, new cpus, and new gts gfx cards.. so Im gonna wait for a few months...

If I cant afford the new stuff, at least the current new stuff may be cheaper!!
 
My pain is currently I have nothing to play on, so waiting is gonna be a pain, im just thinking I might go Q6600 and then upgrade next year when prices drop, then I can sell and move on. I cant really believe ill notice a huge difference in gaming anyways,

(Thats it ill place my order and if somin new comes out oh well ill have to wait for it)
 
If ** gonna upgrade then go for a P35 or X38 chipset, as these will support the Penryns from the get-go (when they become more readily available).
I am gonna be getting the Q6600 G0 stepping in the very close future, with a new P35 DS4 mobo, and will wait to see how the benchmarks go with the cpus coming out in '08 before thinking about upgrading again.
 
I've just gone down the Q6600 route this week for an xmas build, but it all depends how patient/impatient you are and there will always be new tech 'just round the corner'.
 
Could do what I've done. Buy a cheap E2180, clock the nuts off it, and get a Q9450 (in my case) when the mad "I'll pay anything to get one of these" rush is over, and they've come down in price and are readily available. Which I'm guessing could be 2-3 months from now at least. In the meantime I've got a chip oc'd to 3.2Ghz and with the rest of my system can handle anything with ease. Even Crysis at 1280 x 1024 with everything on high is a joy to play and behold.
 
Personaly id only wait till jhanuary/february if you couldn't afford current stuff. The only nwe thing coming out which will be worth the extra cash might be a 8800 GX2. Which is going to be quite expensive.

The new intel chips yes they are fast but in games you dont need a quad core over 3ghz. Goes from 3ghz to 4ghz you wont notice any difference as games are mostly gpu limited. Games are built to run on current hardware. There is no quads or duals over 3ghz therefore they wont build a game which needs hardware faster then whats currently out. With a very rare few like crysis but we all knew and were warned taht was coming and its not the cpu holding it back.

Anyway, the new 48xs i dont think will show much over the current x38s. The new intel chips are like 5-10% faster clock for clock and overclock higher. Both of which isn't needed. The new GTS shouild come out in december which i think is worth the wait. But it should be out before january anyway .

Therefore only wait if you cant aford whats currently on and need to pick up a cheap q6600 etc.

yes I could upgrade right now, Just that the Penryn's are just around the corner, I may as well wait I'am happy with what I have now, I'am in no rush, and I really want to put the new cpu in http://www.custompc.co.uk/reviews/125938/asus_p5e3_deluxe_wifiap.html or
if something better comes along etc, also I'am wanting to put it into a media case, ie occupy living room its going to have to be QUIETish :-)

I would go for a Q6600 now and wait 3 months for the new chips to come out, prices to drop a bit, then either upgrade or keep existing.
 
fwiw, I think now is a terrible time to upgrade/build. there's a lot of new stuff right on the threshold, with amd and intel, and new mobos, ddr3-ram, gfx, etc. even coolers pending.

wait a month or two and your into early-adopter territory, and paying the premium for non-optimised h/w. wait a month or two (or three) after that for value and stability, but the next best is on the horizon!!1!

right now, you can get some very decent/stable parts - but they won't top the benchmarks for very long at all. pays yer money and so on.

ok, this hasn't helped very much, 'cept to say that if you need a system immediately, buy now, if you can wait, wait. hth, best of luck mate :)

Just order the quad the new stuff wont be that much better:cool:
 
Well im gonna just wait for the revised GTS, see what the prices are like (Playing at high res so probably worth the little bit extra) then just order the quad!

Then worse case if the new cpus are amazing I auction this quad and purchase the new!
 
I recently just sprung for Q6600, and have no regrets. Sure, the new stuff might be just around the corner, but from the benchies I have seen the Penryn's are not THAT much better.

It will be along time before your CPU becomes outdated. Hell, I think it will even be some time before the dual core Core 2's show major signs of aging.

If you don't currently have something and you can afford the Q6600, I would say go for it.

I personally went with a P35 single PCI-E x16 board as I hate being tied to either Nvidia or AMD for dual card donfigs. If they release dual solutions I would consider them, but will not go with SLI or XFire boards.
 
The difference between stuff now and stuff in January/February next year is not going to be startling. Penryn only really demosntrates huge differences in SSE4-based applications, i.e. encoding and workstation-class software.

GPU-wise, we might have a bit of an improvement, but not much technically. AMD will be shooting for 2xGPU boards and Nvidia will probably introduce something similar... the performance of which will probably not be very different to what is available at this point in time.

If you're going to play Crysis, etc. your system is going to get hammered regardless of whether you upgrade now or in three/four months' time. If you're playing Bioshock/UT3-engined games, you won't have a problem on today's tech.

Buy now and get a year's enjoyment out of it before the really interesting stuff pops up.
 
I'd say wait. Although penryn mostly shows major differences in SSE4, it does apparently have slight core improvements which result in about an extra 5-10% IPC, not to mention its a smaller 45nm process, which means it should run cooler, and therefore theoretically might overclock further :)

I wouldn't wait til further than february/march really though if you want to buy soon, as theres always new stuff coming, but to be fair it makes sense to wait a little while for penryn, as it may make current chips slightly cheaper or prove to be an overclocking champion, which increases its usable lifespan somewhat :)


Im waiting til Jan/Feb as although theres not much going on thats really worth waiting for GPU wise, you may as well see if the new CPUs are anygood, as you'll kick yourself if you realise a month later you should have waited.
 
Hi

I've currently got no PC and have best part of £1k ready for a brand new build, really really don't know which of the below to do :-

1- Q6600 now
2- E2180 o/c then review in Feb/March, prob go QX9450
3- Wait altogether til QX9450 in Jan/Feb and do without for 4-6 weeks
 
I decided to go with the q6600, I thought it would be best to go with this wait for the inital rush to get the new cpu is done and then sell this on and upgrade...
