As title says about to build a new rig would windows 7 be a waste of cash?
I see the windows 8 beta is imminent, would the beta be a viable os until full release?

It's going to have bugs that a full release will not. I believe the general advice is NOT to run it on a "mission critical" machine, as you should expect apps and general stability to be lower than it would be on a copy of retail Windows 7.

Well if you have >4GB total RAM (so system + video) then you're going to lose some of it.

Otherwise Vista certainly isn't a bad OS as long as you service pack it (I had terrible issues with it before SP1, had to go back to XP).

If you have Vista 32 bit I believe you can install the 64 bit with your license. Though I would recommend you buy Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional Retail box instead and then you can sell it on when you change to 8. I don't see the change happening for a long time yet though, nor do I see it being a big leap forward for enthusiasts.

So probally the best bet is to bite the bullet and buy windows 7. I do have vista unfortunately it's the 32bit version.
Your licence covers you for both 32-bit and 64-bit installs, all you need to do is obtain (or borrow) a x64 installation disc.

I don't think I'd be buying Windows 7 at this late stage unless I had no other option - if I were you I'd soldier on with Vista for just a few more months, if you don't want to use the Win8 preview as a main OS.

Ah interesting I'll have to see if I can grab a 64bit version frOm somewhere.
I'm all for using win8 beta as a main os if it's doable gaming and stability wise.
My comp will be mainly used for playing swtor which seems to be a pain in the bum for any system.
