Should I worry about PCIe 5.0?

I'm looking to do a new build around the 9800X3D when it launches and I am researching motherboards.

I currently have a 4070 Super which I picked up recently for an absolute steal.

I'm not a frequent upgrader. I'm currently on my circa 10 year old 4790k and similarly will be looking to prolong/future proof this build as much as possible. That will likely mean dropping in a 6080/7080 a few years down the line or AMD equivalent

I'm looking at B650 boards, not many support PCIe 5.0. Is this likely to be an issue with future graphics cards in the next 5+ years?

I'm not too bothered about M.2 gen 5.

My only requirement is for a full ATX board so I have an accessible PCIE slot underneath a double/tripple slot graphics card.

I'm currently looking at the ROG Strix B650E-F due to its PCIE 5.0 support. However, it's quite a pricy board and would like to save some money there if possible.

Any recommendations would be greatly welcomed. Thanks.

It's not something I would be worrying about.

Based on the scaling done with pcie 3.0 and pcie 4.0 then its around a 3% bottleneck, and has been similar for previous generations

I wouldn't worry especially if it's a high end gpu

To give some indication of why it doesn't really matter

The rtx4090 is the fastest gpu, an if you run it with pcie 2.0 it still the fastest gpu by far

Pcie 4 will be fine for years. So don’t worry about it.

I would recommend you get X870 instead, these have PCI-E 5.0 graphics and USB4.

You don't NEED PCI-E 5.0 and I wouldnt bother buying a high end board just for it.

By the time you need 5.0 for a GPU then PCI-E 6.0 will be out.

You are effectively throwing money at nothing for an X870 board (for example)

Yeah I remember the PCI-II/III debate, compared to the two, put gen 3 in gen 2 boards, tested fps.

fps difference meaningless.

All about selling more and more- you want 16K for your apple watch at 1000fps!!!! haha

PCI-e 5.0 is a marketing exercise to sell more motherboards.

It adds zero value to most people since 4.0 is plenty fast enough to the majority of use cases.

I wish manufacturers would add POST/BOOT code readouts (not just small coloured LEDs that give you a vague indication) so I can tell exactly where the system is failing to BOOT from.

£45 off Asus motherboard promotion ends tonight. They've also had a price drop in the last few days. You might want to take a look at the E-E rather than the E-F, but the E-E is a bit more expensive
