Should my network be doing this ?

my network is setup like this

Virgin home hub gig (downstairs)
Linksys DLAN converter 200mbps (down stairs)
Linksys DLAN converter 200mbps hub PLS300 (upstairs)
Linksys SE2500 gig switch which connects to
my computer gig and WDshare space NAS gig

When I transfer between my computer and NAS it goes via my router downstairs, I've noticed this before when my routers have locked up it affects my connection to the NAS.

I had Virgin installed yesterday and I've been transferring everything off my NAS to hard disk so I can rebuild it, however every so often (I believe) the router throws a b0rk for 3-4 packets as I lose connection (set up pings from my computer) to the router and to the internet and I think it's the 2TB I'm copying but I can't understand why the traffic doesn't just go through the switch.

no matter what you have going on in your house if you have the IP address info correctly configured on both your PC and NAS and they are both connected to a switch is should take the least path (eg the switch)

This is what I expected, once my NAS has finished rebuilding the RAID i'll try and copy files with the connection from the switch to the DLAN converter unplugged and then i'll try and copy with it connected and unplug it half way through to see if it drops.

If it does indeed avoid the router then i'll start the 2TB transfer back from my comp to the NAS and ping the NAS and loop back address to see which one b0rks.

It will go via the switch regardless. Unless they are on different networks (IP) or there is a fault with the switch somehow.
