Hi. have good old cable BB and until now have been running it into PC via USB from the modem.. recently purchased an ethernet card that says on the packet it runs upto Mbps1000 however when i check it running it states "Speed 100/FULL"..

Is there something i am missing?

It'll be 1000Mbps if plugged into a gigabit switch. However the ethernet port on cable modems is only 100Mbps - since the maximum speeds they can support is around 38Mbps, what's the point of having them equipped with 1000Mbit interfaces?

So see if i have this right?
the cable modem maxes out at 100Mbps. so i get no benefit in having my 1000Mbps ethernet card.should have just stuck to a 100Mbps card.... Correct?

Well, technically your cable modem is never going be able to supply you a connection faster than 38Mbps, so you only need a 100Mbps connection from the modem to PC/router/whatever.

So yes, a 1000Mbps card is doing nothing more for you than a 100Mbps one would. There isn't much difference in price though, and the gigabit might come in handy one day

38Mbits is fast if you look at what most people in Britain gets for broadband which is upto 8mbit which is the norm today.

If you want more speed to the net you will have to spend some serious amount of money to get a dedicated line.

If you get 1000mbit switch and you and your mates hook up your pc's to it you can get some nice lan gaming going and transfering files between your boxes should be nice and fast.

In time cable will scale higher but on the current DOCSIS 2.0 will not support more than 38Mbps. Cable is up to 20Mbps in the UK right now which is pretty fast and the modems still have plenty of headroom - shame about their network

Great now i am starting to understand.. i have 8mbps coming into the house. so regardless of the Gigabit router and Gigabit Ethernet card it will never be more than 8Mbps flowing into PC.. correct?

so my thinking is that you only get the full use out of the Gigabit Router and Gigabite EC when u are just hooking up 2 or more PCs together. does that mean between the pc`s it runs at 1000mbps through the CAT5 cable?

Yeah bascially your speed from the internet can't go any faster than what your broadband speed is so if thats 8mbit thats all you can hope to achive get from the net.

Between two pc's that both have a gigabit ethernet you will be able to transfer at gigabit speeds through your gigabit switch. It's fully backwards compatible so if your mate only have 100mbit network on his pc you can still use that in your switch and it will slow down your transfer speed to 100mbit.
