just got done gutting the living room in my artex palace and i'm thinking of opening up the fireplace and "doing something" with it, so I thought i'd start a thread for a bit of inspo, and a good opportunity for y'all to show off

We are currently doing this. We have decided with our limited time and the fact we have a 2yo we are getting a fireplace company to do it for us. More than I wanted to pay, but happy with the face a pro will be doing it and it will be done in 1-2 days. Obviously no pics yet, but when done will post some. Hopefully will be done in 3 weeks

There's a log burner thread on here somewhere which might give you some inspiration (although will all be log burner based :p)

I started with a flat wall, I knew there was a chimney in there somewhere !

I put a gas fire in, very pleased with it.

In the living room I use mine for AV. Got a shelf in and all the cables go up the chimney via a waste pipe for tidiness.

Upstairs we've just got the classic decorative logs so no point at all.

Not quite what you asked, but some food for thought!
Previous house was a 1960's bungalow, we did think about putting a fire in but it didn't really seem in keeping with the property. Plus I had spare bricks, cement and plaster so the total cost was about £10 for the plastic vent and a short length of skirting board.

The fire has never worked as long as we have lived here (3.5 years) and is pretty hideous. I have just had the gas capped off and pulled out the fire place and we are left with a hole at the moment. It's a 1970's semi so I'm not sure a grand fireplace is exactly fitting! Current plan is a beam/shelf over the hole, keep the hearth and line the hole with something, maybe tiles or wood? Then pop a basket of pinecones in or something.

Fixed it, stupid google. They are in one of my shared albums on photos which seems like they are working when I'm signed in to my account, but then they don't for everybody else and I don't realise! It's still at the before stage as at the moment I just have the hole there, I'm going to finish painting of the rest of the room before I start this as I'm sick of living in a building site!

Picture of it as it stands now. Once I finish the rest of the room I will do something with the hole!

Now maybe? You get to see the impressive amount of filler I needed to fix the state of the walls that the grim textured wallpaper was hiding! The whole room is white with filler!

Dave

Still not working.

Current state of my gaping filthy hole.

Thinking I'm going plastered front, hearth Moroccan tiled, bare brick in the reveal.

The brickwork looks pretty decent and there are no old back boiler holes and pipes like I have.

Final attempt at the photo. Stupid google "shared albums!
