Show us your drawings/artwork

Some of these are amazing and makes me really want to try drawing again. I use to love it when younger, in my teens. Although not the most creative of people I could sketch things I see pretty well.

I got a Wacom bamboo pen and touch I have tried very briefly but it seems so difficult to use! It's so sensitive doesn't feel right and I get this small lag when first starting and when it catches up I find my line has gone awol.

It's just a case of practicing with it over and over again :D

There was a tutorial thread on drawing but it's not really been posted in for a long time which is a shame, some people here have a lot of skill and knowledge to share.

in fact, I don't understand why OCUK hasn't got a tutorials section at all.

I've always wanted to learn to draw people, and having some spare time over the summer, I've tried to learn. The drawings are all on my website, starting from the second ever attempt (forgot to scan the first, it was only a small drawing) and proceeding in order as I've improved. The link is in my sig (under 'Art'), but I'll post three of my favourites here. All of my drawings so far are of celebrities, some a little obscure, but I hope you'll recognise at least some of them. Anyway, my three faves thus far:

Third should be obvious (hint: lightsaber!), the other two maybe not so much. The first is an actress who's pretty eclectic, the second is a well known young actress who's face isn't quite as narrow as I've drawn it there.

Comments & criticism welcome. I'm quite enjoying this new hobby, and I think there's a pretty clear progression on the website from the first to the most recent ones, with a few blips along the way. :)

Lance, what kind of reading material have you been using, specifically the painting stuff. I love the horse, would love to be able to produce something like that :)

Strange fact, I've never actually read an art book... although I have recently ordered 6 'Art of books' to start a library and get some inspiration :D

I just practice a lot and I'm sure to put my Cintiq to use at least once per day. My Dad used to be a designer and was stupidly good at painting, he taught me some stuff when I was younger:) It's only recently I've decided to pursue it :D

How do you find drawing on the cintiq? I heard there's a space between the actual screen and glass, and it disorientates some people.

It all depends on how you sit with it. The Cintiq is easily calibrated, and when done so in your most used seating position the 1/4 cm gap isn't even noticed. Like a normal tablet you adjust to any disparity. I will close by saying, they're well worth the money in my opinion.

Christ there's some talent in this thread! One day I might ask someone (if they've ran out of stuff to do) to recreate a hallucination I once had. It was mental.

Some texture practice today, 1 hour Zbrush and PS.

On the subject of Cintiq I can't use them due to my hand covering up the screen and the neck ache I get hunched over them. Too used to the traditional tablet now strangely enough.

How long does that kind of thing take?

With planning and then drawing you're at about 10 hours. Then scanning, cleaning and layout another 4 hours (layouts require some pondering and postulating). Maybe 2 hours for the background and say another 3 for final touches and general sorting. So 19 hours right there. It took 5 evenings in total :)

Yikes! I bet commissioning something similar costs a fair whack, then.

If I had a reputation behind me then it would, but as it stands I'm just about to start Uni and haven't taken a commission on yet. If he was a client, then I would have done it for £70+ (Maybe £50 if I was especially broke!), but really you could be looking at a lot more!

It depends on what you want and whether there you can provide reference so that re-hashing things is at a minimum. With the above picture, he just said do what you want so we based it on the listening experience and some previous stuff I've done so it was fairly directed, which isn't always the case :p

Hmm, very interesting thanks! If everything goes according to plan I will be publishing some fiction next year so I'll need a nice front cover or two. :D

wow, stunning work in here!

@ crofty, is that piece you've done with the pillars/flowers/crown drawn by hand? or is done in some digital way? Either way looks so clean and crisp and the finished article looks great ;-D I'd say you should look at increasing your fees!
