I started off cycling to lose weight. As the weight dropped off, I got quicker and quicker and that was my motivation. I only really rode three different routes that year but I was driven by quicker and faster segment times with most rides no more than 20 miles.

In 2020 I dared to join a casual local cycle club and they took me on some longer rides and I started to explore Hertfordshire.

Times were still getting quicker and I was finding all kinds of new segments to test myself on!

Then in 2021 I started to transfer my interest from speed to exploration. I was actually a lot slower by the end of the year too, but was really enjoying just finding new roads. I started driving out to places more to miss out those first and last 10 miles that I'd cycled so many times.

2021 also included a few trips away, which can be seen in my full heatmap, all time to date -

This year is likely to expand things much further, with two trips abroad planned and I hope to have a few more trips away too.

What does your heatmap look like? You don't need to show your story over time like me... (I highly recommend using Veloviewers heatmap as the easiest to see)

Mine is really boring. Started road cycling in August last year but I'm counting this year as my first proper year of cycling. Hoping to go out further afield and explore some new routes as I typically just stick to what I know

edit: annoyingly I must not have been using Strava much in 2020 as I did cycle out to Cheddar on my fixie but that ride was the ride that made me realise I A) Really enjoyed cycling and B) Wanted a road bike for longer rides

Then have to wait about 20 minutes for me to climb up it!

I rode down it on my fixie, that was not very fun as my legs were just spinning and spinning and it only has a rubbish Tektro front brake on there. It was literally at that point going down it I realised that fixed gears are brilliant for bombing around a relatively flat city but going either up or down steep hills were not fun.

Really great progress mate, it's great to see on things like Heatmaps. But how are you doing those from Veloviewer? Took a look yesterday and don't see anything about them.

Or are you using the tile explore thing? If so what settings and I'll post mine up. I've only really ever done them from Strava before and have most years in there.

Any guess where my commute is?

Haha yeah have to say mine looks very similar!

Although I find it quite interesting living down there you've never ridden to Lands End or St Ives! :D

there's a good reason.
well, several.
78km and 1100m of climbing each way.

I think just go to Activities, hide the list and show the map. Then obviously I set filters for the different years, if that's what you need.
Ahhh got it now, the little squares threw me on yours but can see that now too. Weirdly my biggest square is 8x8 and it's not in an area I'd say I ride very often! Just too many of them around here with barely a no through road track in them so will never really ride them!

I like to explore, but not *that* much!

Zoomed out to provide some context and Cities/geographical identifiers.

I really look like a creature of habit - although looks like I favour to ride West - quieter roads & Welsh hills! :D

Sounds a perfect excuse to go, rather than avoid! ;)

Or go to St Austell and grab me some of the best IPA from the brewery there - 'Proper Job'! :D

It's really not the best.
it's not even the best from Cornwall.

That would be Lushingtons, or maybe something from Verdant.
or maybe something from Goodh in Truro.
