It is a lot of money - but I love the flexibility you get with a hot hatch. I looked at Caymans and other more traditional sports cars. But hot hatches for me can't be matched for performance and practicality. It does 0-62 in 4.8 seconds and I can take four people on holiday and their luggage. Win-win in my mind!

Also I would argue this is in the hyper-hatch bracket that seems to be emerging with the Golf R, A45 AMG, Focus RS, etc. - so yes it's more than a Focus ST (my previous car)

4 people and luggage on holiday in a hot hatch? On holiday where, a 2 night citybreak?!

We fill a 3 Series sized car boot to the brim on holiday and there are only 2 of us!

I managed many a time to get 4 suit cases in the boots of hatchbacks. Usually sit up four suitcases - parcel shelf removed usually

We fill a V70 estate when the four of us go on holiday for anything more than a weekend trip... You must travel exceedingly light.

I can't see how he does it - with two of us the boot on a 3 Series I rented to get to Heathrow was full - two normal sized suitcases and two rucksacks was all it'd take.

How you'd get twice as much as that in a Golf I've absolutely no idea, especially as you couldn't even overflow into the back seats if you had 2 people sat in them.

I can't see how you can take 4 adults on holiday in a hot hatch.

Roof box ;)

Did that a number of times in my Leon Cupra R.

I once took three people (plus myself) and three peoples worth of luggage (for a 4 day stay) in my old Polo... Parcel shelf out, couldn't see out of the back properly, and the people in the back had rucksacks on their laps. :p

A friend of mine also did similar in a Micra.

By that logic I'd say I could EASILY do the same with four people in the Corolla, however it would be similarly packed, with bags on laps.

If you mean comfortably however, without blocking the back window and piling things on top of people, then I agree, you would need something bigger... But the A3 Sportback is bigger than the Corolla... So maybe...... Maybe its do-able.

Exactly this ^^^

So really what you mean is that as long as your passengers are happy to sit beneath their luggage hot hatches are great for taking 4 adults on holiday.

Which of course in reality means you probably don't want to use a hot hatch to take 4 adults and luggage on holiday :p

Ive done two holidays in a Mini Countryman with the wife and 3 kids! :p But then Im a vehicle packaging expert. :D

They were Holiday trips to the airport going Gatwick for a week in Italy so I guess that helps as the clothing is lightweight.

I managed to move everything I own from France to England, and then back again, in the boot and back seats of a Jag XJ. Possessions are over rated :p

Haha possessions are over rated - glad we all got around the cars have space - you can put things in them conversation.

Shall we move onto more interesting things now?

I couldn't fit 4 friends in my A3 to go and get fish and chips, God forbid using it to go on holiday. I took my two sisters and their friend to Manchester airport and the boot held a massive 3 bags. I bet the suspention is great with a brimmed car.

Although no doubt it's an outstanding car I'd have personally just got one of the new A4s.
