That noise, if it's from the gearbox, either means it's knackered or straight-cut...to me it sounds like straight cut gears

Thats settled then. Straight cut gears. :)

Someone told me a while ago it was because it can be put into gear when the engine is off with no clutch, is that correct or just jibberish?

Not sure that is straight cut to be honest, the mini's I have been in before have all had whiney gearboxes, so i have a feeling it is just the way they are. I am also pretty sure straight cut gears would be a LOT louder than that in the car

It's doesn't bother me if it is or not. Would be nice to know though. And normal or straight cut gearboxes are easily available from most mini specialists. Can you post a video of what straight cut gears would sound like? :)

That ones seems to have straight cut gears, the whine is always there, where as yours only seems to show up on the video when you are accelerating, and not so much when at a constant speed

Picked up my new MX-5 last night, very pleased with it so far, had a lovely drive home in the sun and stopped off for a photo:

2L Sport Tech Roaster Coupé - brand new (dons flame suit) with a pretty hefty discount.

So naturally the summers just finished, torrential rain last and looks like its going to be a bit grim over the weekend :(

Good grief, how could anyone stand that noise all the time! ...it started to grate on me just watching the video.

You'll probably laugh at this now ...but I find when I play Grand Turismo 5 and I put a fully customisable transmission into a car (they make the same sort of noise) I have to turn the sound down quite low as it gets on my nerves so much :p

Haha moeks. I love it to be honest, then again I am used it now.

A mate of mine was a passenger once and it was his first time in a mini and he thought my mini was supercharged! :p
