Show Us Your Motors!

yup i was mixing up the 1 series way of doing it there i think :) I know there is no M in the e89, not sure why i tagged that on.

See I'd really be interested in driving another 335i on my daily commute to see if i can really break 30mpg realistically over an entire tank, but I cant think how i would practically do that really? :s

How long is your commute? I do about 140 miles a day and manage mid-high 30's without much bother. Normally cruise at about 80 with the odd faster overtake.

I'd imagine you'd get about what you got from your 330i in it. As thats what I found, anyway. Like for like they were very much the same economy wise.

Fux, your 335i was a manual, i saw about 10-15% less than my 330i in the same situations in the 335i auto....where as i see at least 40% more in the 335D.

140 miles a day of motorway id be seeing mid 40s from the 335D auto and low to mid 30s fro the 335i IME, my commute itself is only ~20 miles of mixed flow traffic each way, which i can happily get 36-37 from in my 335D and probably mid 20s from my experience of the 335i, car is only just really getting warm when i get there!

I don't know about the 3 series, but the Z4 Auto is more fuel efficient than the manual - presumably due to the extra gear.

Think about the sound though ;) You're only young once, it's worth the extra cash just to hear that noise every morning.

the z4 auto 7 speed you mention is DCT is it not? the 335i until the very late ones are 6 speed torque converter before switching to DCT, and they DIDNT add the efficient dynamic box to it at any point either, fuel efficiency is definitely worse.

As soon as i start doing ~10-12k a year I'll grab a petrol :p

I actually don't dislike the sound of the 335D under load, its definitely better than a 4 pot petrol IMO. It sounds "ok" instead of the "**** YEA" sound of the petrol :p

All the Z4 35i's are manual or DCT. They dont do a conventional auto.

The 335i didn't 'change' to DCT - DCT was simply added as an option for the 2009 model year (It was the first car with DCT infact).

I didn't think you could get a torque converter car at the same time as the DCT box? I personally didnt come across one but i might be wrong.

Actually yes, you are right - its just made more confusing with the E92 as there were loads of pre MY09 cars registered in 2009 meaning you can have a 58 plate DCT or an 09 plate standard auto..

I know, but I can imagine 1st gear being useless in a FWD 300bhp car.

Can't go anywhere near WOT in 1st and have to feed it in still for some of 2nd. Makes 0-60 times pretty shocking. I'd say the 0-60 in my Volvo actually increased after a remap lol but on the move it's a different story.

I have to shift to 2nd as soon as I'm rolling then feed through 2nd to 3rd but even third spins lol 4th gear wheelspin in the wet coming off a roundabout :/
