Used to be a much larger Parkray in the space (well a little bit larger but had a big fancy frame) and that was the cut out for the thermostat knob/dial.

I agree it drives me up the wall too after looking at the photo. Not so bad in real life.

I remember ripping one of these out and slicing the tip of my thumb on the flue. Then it got soot in the cut and my god the pain was unbelievable. I nearly passed out lol.
