Is the shroud on this card needed for cooling, or is it for aesthetic purposes? link to card. I am asking because in order to fit it into my case I will need to mod the shroud (i.e. chop the end of it off).

I think it's more than aesthetic. It must force the air the fans pull to flow from inside the case to outside thecase.
I suspect you are probably correct.

I would suggest it is required to keep the vrm/Mem/Chips cool by the air flow being generated by the fan.

Haha, not quite yet. I might have a different story tomorrow night
. The card, along with the CPU, mobo, and SSD, (but no RAM yet... 
, hopefully Saturday ) arrives in the mail tomorrow. I don't mind modifying the card, just would have preferred not to in case I sell it on in future.
Everything is now complete. I did have to modify the card, but only a very small amount.
