Shutdown the wrong system

Wasn't really sure what forum to post this in, but found it quite funny so thought I'd share it.

My brother's come back from university for a day or two and his room is being redone at the moment, so he's sleeping in the spare room. In the spare room I have a very noisy dual PIII box that runs Folding@Home on it. So noisy that when people are sleeping in the room I turn it off. So, I SSH into it and run 'shutdown -h -t secs now', about 20 minutes ago now. And that would have been it.

Before I go on I should explain, I have another box that runs as my server, providing my personal email, personal website, Folding@Home signatures for these forums, runs a couple of other, smaller websites, and provides other miscelaneous services. Nothing that would stop the Earth rotating but it's important to me.

A minute or two later I check my email and find Outlook telling me it couldn't connect to the server. Odd. Then the penny drops.

I'd only gone and SSHed into the wrong box and shut down my server without realising. Only difference that would have been noticable between them is the Folding@Home box is called Saturn and the server is Venus. You can see Venus's new uptime here: http://venus.piggott.me.uk/phpsysinfo :o

Just thought I'd share this with people, and wondered if anyone else has done similar?

null :)

At work one of the IT chaps managed to SSH into our NIS master server (to a site of around 300-400 unix/linux boxes) it also hosted some other important things and did a shutdown on that by accident. Funny thing was that we didn't have any slave server's

Another guy in the IT department also leant on the emergency power supply cut off switch to the computer room, obviously housing equipment serving the site of around 2000 machines.

Many years ago one of the Operations guys at my work was asked to shutdown ome of the IMS systems (it's a kind of application server running on a Z/OS mainframe - or OS/390 as it was then).

Unfortuntately for him, he shutdown the entire banks live cashpoint system instead :D
