What type of things result in long shut down times?

My PC takes a stupidly long time over shutting down. It has done for as long as i can remember. It takes around 2 mins to shut down on its own and often i just get fed up and turn it off at the plug.

However, recently, after clicking shutdown there has been a long period of HDD action (around 1 min) and then it does nothing. No shutting down, nothing. I am typing this message after clicking shutdown.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Thanks

Some complicated viruses/trojans spend the shutdown/boot period rewriting themselves into the registry and doing other nasty stuff. I take it you don't have random IE popups etc or any other dodgy activity?

Nope, got no dodgey activity. Ill do a full scan when i go out in a bit just to be sure. Any other ideas?

I forgot to mention that upon clicking shutdown i used to get two message boxes after one another. I did read these and was going to take screenshots but i didnt get round to it. Ive got used to just clicking 'ok' and so cant remember what they said. This would stop the shutdown process but clicking shutdown a 2nd time would then turn the pc off. This hasn't happened for the last few days however.

Not from me mate, sorry. I normally just do a fresh Windows reinstall every 2-3 months to keep things smooth and I'd imagine that would solve your problem.
