Having just seen cykey's thread on shutter life I have probably a very simple question...do lenses have a similar sort of life like this as well?

Obviously as time goes on things can go wrong, but do they were in 'that' way?

I don't think that they will have a life measurable in shots taken per se, but obviously wear and tear will build up over time. It's difficult to judge as many factors come into play - how you store your lenses, how you treat them in use, how you clean them and obviously, their build quality. Canon L lenses are not expensive for their optics alone

lenses, as long as you treat them right, should last a very long time. The biggest threat is fungus... A quick google will reveal tips on how to avoid this, though.

aye - I keep three small bags of silica gel in my kit bag, and when I come back in from a long days shooting, I "zoom" all my lenses in//out to replace the air in them.

It's worth noting that you shouldn't keep silica gel sachets in your bag indefinitely - take them out and dry them on something warm periodically.

If they become saturated they'll have the opposite effect to absorbing moisture - they'll give it off!
