A friend of mine has the following problem:

I have noticed that it takes FOREVER to shutdown Window's XP, sometimes it doesn't shutdown at all when I click the "Shut Down" button.

Is there any way I can make my computer shutdown faster?

Anyone know how to help?

Lysander, get your friend to have a look in Event Viewer for event ids 1517 and 1524. If they're there, get him to download and install User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

Definitely try the above.

When I was shutting down it stuck at "Saving your settings..." for about 30 seconds (rather than the normal ~2 seconds). The profile hive cleanup service put it back to normal and made shutdown a lot faster :D

In fact, when you build a PC - Put it on.
So it's always there :)

The other things to check for are useless programs running at boot.
Stop any non-essential ones from running.
Boot will be quicker.
