I am considering building a system, just for storage and tasks such as bittorrent. It will basically be a server, running 24/7, and it needs to be quiet as possible, consume as little power as possible, and connect to the internet via wireless. I would like to use a shuttle, as I would like a small system that could sit of a shelf, or something.
Now I have a few questions...
1. I was considering using a Celeron D because you can pick one up for 20/25 quid, however a Core 2 Duo runs quicker at a lower temperature I believe. Is this correct? If so, I see the lower running tempreature and lower power consumption worth the extra cost.
2. How clockable is a shuttle? I would not be looking to overclock the processor, but possiblity underclocking it, so that less heat and less power is consumed.
3. I am considering having 2 hard drives in RAID 1, because I would like redundancy. I can not afford to lose any of my data. Does RAID 1 have any performance boost when it comes to reading? And, in case of a drive failing, how easy is it to set the RAID up again with a new drive?
4. I am planning to run Linux on this system, and the client PC will be running windows. I have found an article, where someone has explained how to set up Ubuntu Linux, Apache, MySQL, Samba, and a bittorrent client. Does anyone have any tips, or links to other articles on configuring a Linux installation to fulfill my needs? I have a bit of Linux experience, but due to the fact that the majority of my work I can't do without Windows I haven't used it much.
