Shuttle SK21G heat woes...

Just built a temporary shuttle system built around a SK21G, ive got a Sempron 2800+, 1Gb geil Value RAM and a 128mb 6800 LE all in there, my problem is that the 6800 seems to be running a bit too warm. Im using the built in Temperature monitor in the Nvidia official drivers and it claims that at idle its sitting between 55c - 60c and when in a game it can rise to 100c - 110c which by my understanding is far too hot although I havent experienced any crashes or lockups yet. Ambient temperatures seems to be around 30c-40c.

I think the problem is the SK21G's cooling, it only has 1 fan at the back which is connected to the CPU heatsink (CPU runs quite cool - 30c-45c under full load) and as far as I know, thats it. Ive tried cleaning the 6800 LE fan/heatsink to no avail. Is there anything I can do to improve the temperatures?

Do you have the Shuttle ICE fan set to auto? So it only speeds up in response to CPU temperature increase, but rarely gets loud.

If you don't mind the increased noise you could change the BIOS setting to low or medium. This will force the fan to always spin at that selected speed so generating a consistent case airflow.

I'd try medium setting. You could consider a quieter fan to replace the stock one if it's beyond your noise tolerance.

those temps for the 6800 i'd say are fine. all gpu's have a much higher threshold for heat than cpu's

the SK21G's design is fine and is identical to pretty much every shuttle before it, the 92mm fan on the back does an excelent job of keepin everythin cool with the ICE. the problem is the 6800 is crammed right next to the side of the case which cuts the ammount of airflow in half, hence the higher temps

though having said that, i used to run a 9800XT in an SN45G with the stock fan on it, that never really got above 75 degrees and i swear that was probs one of the hottest gpu's around lol (this was also when shuttles used only 80mm fans and not 92 on the cpu's), so im surpised the 6800 is getting so hot. maybe take the heatisnk off it, put some AS5 on and make sure the heatisnks on properly??

coincedentally i've jsut built one of these up too with a 2800+ but havnt got a g-card in it yet. i've set the fan speed to low and it keeps the cpu at around 35 degrees. they are always set to smart fan as standard so would be worth changing it, as smart fan actually runs slower than low before the temp rises lol

Thanks for the responses, got the fan set to medium now, at full it sounded like it was about to take off! Medium is bareable, when I get a chance il see if the temps are any lower in game. Reassuring to hear that the temps are not going to be damaging though, thanks.

Il try reapplying the heatsink as well when I can.

A useful free utility for checking temperatures, not just of the grpahics card, is Everest Home Edition 2.2

It's no longer available from Lavalys directly, but a search should find a source on the net.
