Shuttle SN45G sound

OK, my PSU packed up on my shuttle SN45G so I'm using a backup HP core2duo PC. Now I realise what all the fuss was about the sound when I bought the shuttle years ago. The sound on the HP is really hopeless, and now I realise, that I would need a separate sound card to get better sound.

Anyone else with this shuttle found/noticed this?

If so, would like to know what sound cards you may have bought and how they compare.

PS. I'm still using my AEGO speakers that I previously attributed all the sound quality to. Now I realise that my very onboard sound was partly to thank.

PPS. Any other sound card recommendations also welcome - if the cost is high, then if you can try to explain/justify with the benefits.

PPPS. I only use a 2.1 setup.

PPPPS. Curious if you also have interesting pasta recipes.

PPPPPS. Ta.

I can't really help but when I moved from onboard asus on my asus motherboard to an xtrememusic the sound had a lot more punch and life to it, however my shuttle sb61 onboard realtek has died so my xfi is now in there powering some 5w tv speakers and is such a waste as my hifi is in my room on my asus machine.

Not really used any quality speakers on my sb61/sb75 shuttles to compare but the sound through headphones has always been good on my shuttle. If you're looking for some reasonable sound then any xfi should do it for aego speakers, might be better off in sound forum though as it's not really an area I know about.

the sound on the SN45G was pretty awesome at the time. Soundstorm 2 was regarded my many as one of the best integrated solutions around, partly because it could encode your audio into Dolby Digital on the fly.

Because I liked the whole 5.1 encoding in my old SN45G i went for an X-Mystique soundcard when they were on offer for £35 at OcUK a couple of years ago because they offered the same functionality. Now day's I dont use the Dolby encoding but I do still prefere the sound of this card over the integrated sound in my current core 2 mobo

I guess goin by that you could check out the newer versions of the card, alternativly you might be better askin in the soundcard forums?

Thanks - also asked in the sound forum.

Never realised I fluked a very good onboard sound solution when I bought the SN45g years ago. I was just testing out my mp3's in my current HP dc5700 backup computer and the sound has no life. A good sound solution will now be a requirement of my new main rig.

I miss my SN45G's soundstorm :'(

Whatever you do, don't fiddle with the VDimm on that shuttle, kills it instantly :/

Would it not be cheaper to get a new shuttle PSU rather than a soundcard?

Yes, I looked at that possibility - I'm not thinking with my head here. I'm tempted to see what all this Crysis malarky is about so I do 'need' a new rig. Stupid really. A new pc is going to cost me around £600, and for what? A faster boot time and the ability to play Crysis. I could get a Wii, PS3 and a second XBOX 360 for that amount of money.
