Hi,

i am currently running a water cooled Asus A8v Deluxe with 4G of ram a 256mb 6400GT GFX card and a AMD X2 4400+ with vista 64bit

now i have been toying with the idea of getting a SFF like the Shuttle XPC SD37P2 but i have no idea on what they are like to use so maybe some of you can tell me what you think.

1, are they quite

2, i have no idea on what GFX card to get and i don't play games on my PC but some times i do edit photos so i was thinking of a silent card like the Asus GeForce EN7600GS or Asus GeForce 8500 GT what do you think ?

3, for ram i was going to get 4Gb of Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel

4, whats the best CPU to go for at the moment 2 core or 4 ?
so far i have looked at getting the Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz

any advise would be appreciated

ok i think i m now going for the SD37P2 with

OCZ 4GB Kit (2xGB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400
Quad pro Q6600

i just need to know what GPX card to get

I'd recommend getting the SD39P2 over that model as it has a PCI slot rather than a pair of PCIe ones.

The graphics card depends on what you want from it. Do you want hardware accelerated media playback like HD video? Do you even want light gaming capabilities?

I think your choices should be between the X1950 Pro, HD2600XT, and 8600GT. The X1950 being the fastest for games but having the least features, and the 2600XT being the slowest but with the most features. The 8600GT is in between the two. It is possible to get silvent versions (i.e totally passive) of all three cards.

Processor would be down to your budget. For image editing, if you can afford it, the Q6600 would be a really good buy, as IIRC a lot of the software you would use would take advantage of all four cores. But if it's out of your price range then an E6600 or similar would be fine.

hello,

i have just read up on the sd37p2 and have heard that the sound isn't to good which i do use for playing my mp3's as for the GPX card i will be using it for the net and photos, i have a ps3 and xbox 360 for games but at the same time i don't want a card that may slow the system down but at the same time i don't want a noisy card as well:D

so what would you use personally

Personally? If I went for a Shuttle (which I wouldn't, mATX > Shuttle! :p) then i'd take the Quad, as it would help image editing a LOT, the SD39P2 for it's PCI slot (nobody Crossfires a Shuttle) and probably the 8600GT.

The 8600GT leaves the PCI slot free and unobstructed so you can just drop in an X-Fi and disable the onboard sound. :)

Can't say i've heard bad things about the sound on the Shuttles though, if anything i've heard it's better as Shuttle use a better chip, they don't expect people to fit an external sound card with such little space inside!

Err, hello everyone, first post on these forums, so take my opinions with a pinch of salt!

so you would say get the SG33G5B with a 8600GT any one in particular

I am also looking at these shuttles at the moment (perhaps more on the later), but I just wanted to query that particular choice of model, as far as I can tell from the specs it has integrated graphics chip and makes no mention of a gpu slot. The PSU is 250W. I can't see support for RAID either, although that may be less of an issue for you.

Where I'd got to in my deliberations: settled on the 95W quad core CPU Q6600, so agreed on that; similarly had decided that the SD39P2 was the right case (400W PSU with a 16Xpcie slot); was considering the X1950XTX 512MB card because (a) it's around £110 which seems great value (b) it seems to have had good reviews about it's revised cooling system.

With all that said, it does appear as though the SD39P2 isn't in stock with a lot of mainstream suppliers - haven't called anyone yet to find out more. Also, I don't know *for sure* if the X9105XTX will fit in the shuttle case and if so whether it blocks anything else off.

Am also unsure about choice of memory (I know I want 4GB), and finally I don't know whether I should be getting some sort of special cooler for the CPU rather than the stock one.

Other than that, it's all crystal clear! :D

Hope this helps

hello and welcome to the OCUK forums

i think i to have made my mind up to go with the SD39P2 because it has more power (400watts) as well as more memory slots for the future i will also be using 4Gb of ram as i am running vista 64, and i think i will go with the Q6600 go i also see that there is a PowerColor X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 card which has no fans on it but i don't know if it would fit the SD39P2

Hmm... looks interesting. Shuttle don't seem to have a compatibility list up for that particular model yet... I need to do a bit more homework on this versus the sg01 case. Concerned about temperatures, naturally!

i would think the guys who make the shuttle would test these things for temperatures so would say there OK for the latest CPU's

You don't need to worry about the PSUs on a Shuttle, they're generally of VERY good quality and have run everything I have thrown at them.

The main cause for concern is choosing the quietest hard drives and optical drives really :)

I still say go with the SG33G5B.

You're not going to be gaming, so you don't need a massive PSU, and it comes with a PCIe x16 slot. You're not going to be using much of that 400W PSU on the SD39P2 unless you go for a gaming machine.

The SG33G5B has good CPU support, which, if you're image editing, is where it counts. :)

do you think i would be ok using a Sapphire X1950Pro 512MB with 4Gb ram a Q6600 and 2 hard drives on a 400w power supply because i ordered that passive MSI card and i don't think it will fit in the shuttle because of the heat sink thats on the back of the card, after looking at some pictures of it i don't think there will be enough room between the heat sink and the case.

the reason i ask is because i have read that this card is power hungry

Shuttle PSUs are very strong, I would have thought the 250W one would be fine for an X1950 Pro.

ok thanks for that i don't know why i have seen on so many site that it needs 450w minimum, i have order one anyway i just need to cancel the MSI
