hi there,

a customer of mine bought a machine (not from us!) with xp x64 oem installed... don't go there!

can i sidegrade this to xp 32-bit using the existing oem license, or do i need to purchase a new license?

cheers.

i wouldn't have an issue with xp64 if the machine itself was built such that it could take advantage of it...but it's a basic pentium dual-core with a few hundred megs of ram, used for basic office duties. they tell me they couldn't source a machine with xp32 on when they were looking to purchase...

we have a few driver and software related issues with the machine, and everyone else is xp32, in a business environment i would like all the machines to be the same so we don't have any gotchas.

i figured that was probably the route i was going to have to take, most people seem to be shipping xp with sp3 now though, i would prefer to just have sp2 though as i've not made the shift up yet - grrr! i suppose i dont have to use the media they ship me though, just the license key and any old sp2 media.

sp3 is just sp2 with hotfixes, there's no major changes in it

ahhh ok, thats good to know...i recall seeing a few articles of bits and pieces that you have put 'fixes' in place to resolve issues, particularly in conjunction with small business server environments though.

we're flattening and rebuilding all the clients though so i suppose it might make sense to use the sp3 media that we get with this oem license on all the other clients (that have their own oem licenses) to save us having to download the few hundred megs of update per client.

the media is license independant, right? sound like a plan?

My Pro CD is a non-SP CD and I have intergrated it to SP1,2 and more recently to SP3 and the Serial I use is still the very same one.
My Home CDs the same, but I recently ( Last year ) purchased home SP2 again.

The Serials work no matter what SP they are running.

To answer your first question: no, you cannot crossgrade XP from 32 to 64 bit. You can however, with Vista :)

The OP was however 64 to 32, and not 32 to 64

So, no, XP64 to XP32 is not happening, nor is XP32 to XP64 either.

Fresh install coming up Im afraid.
