So summer's coming and with it come those high ambient temps. My 480 is beginning to get very hot/loud and so i thought about getting something newer/quieter/cooler. Is there anything with comparably performance available no?

I game at 1080p and that won't be changing for the forseeable future so it doesn't need to be an upgrade as such, but would obviously prefer not to lose performance. I'm seeing the 7850 being recommended a lot and from what I can see it runs a hell of a lot cooler than the 480, but I'm having trouble finding benchmarks on an oc'd 7850 to see how it would compare.

Is the 7850 the way to go or should i be looking at soemthing else?

Thanks.

Would you consider a decent 3rd party cooler, could save you a lot, especially as you seem to like the performance of your 480 (assuming yours is a reference card?)

If you're going for a cooler, look at the Accelero Xtreme PLUS series. I have one on my GTX 470 and it really keeps the card cool(rarely went above 50c on games such as BF3). I dont even hear the card too, which is always a bonus :)

Depends what you play. If you play BF3 a lot you're not going to get good performance unless you spend a lot more. I just got a Zalman cooler for mine although it uses 3 slots.

Turn it into a KFA2 480 Anarchy!:

OcUK has 1 in stock:

The downside though is the heat gets dumped from the 480 just the same into the room(it feels less hot but have been assured it's the same;)) .

I'm using two of them in CrossFire, I would get some Akasa thermal tape for the heatsinks instead of using the horrible glue(heatsinks fall off through time) that comes with this cooler if you choose to go down that route.

Regarding the 7850, you would be looking at comparable performance with your 480 when both are overclocked.

Weigh up the pros and cons before deciding, as selling on your 480 and putting the £50 towards a 7850 could be about the same money, though sometimes it's better the devil you know!

I must admit I hadn't thought about an after market cooler, had a quick look about and they all seem to be triple slot, are there any dual slot ones about, or would that just not be worth it over the stock cooler?
