I've noticed that most riders who give you the nod tilt thier head sideways rather than forwards. Assuming it shows I am a member of the secret squirell bikers club, I have taken to doing it to, but I don't actually know why. Is it to make the nod more obvious, or maintain forward visibility, or some other, totally obvious reason that I'm missing?

I got the lag out gesture a few years back for pulling in to let a bike past on the motorway - I was about to overtake, not lane hogging, but he was going faster, so slowed and moved anyway. Always wondered if it was a gesture of thanks, or something else, now I know :)
