I've just got a Microsoft SideWinder X8 wireless mouse which, unfortunately, has a faulty scroll wheel/button so a replacement is on the way but that's another story.

Basically, I've had this mouse two days and the battery was fully recharged using the cable for 3 hours. From the (weak) instructions it seems that the mouse goes into low-power standby mode after X minutes if it isn't being used so I haven't been switching it off. It is supposed to last 30 hours on a full charge. However, this morning I noticed the mouse's LED was flashing the low battery charge indicator yet I've only used the mouse for six hours tops.

When using the mouse wireless are you supposed to turn it off at the power switch underneath or is it OK to leave it on all the time? I use my PC perhaps four hours per night at most during weekdays and maybe eight hours per day over the weekend. By my calculations I should be able to get a full week's use of one charge easily so why aren't I?

Also, the help file installed with the IntelliPoint software (v7.0.260) states that the mouse can be used with the power switch off as long as the recharge cable is connected. It certainly doesn't work like that with my mouse; switching it off with the cable connected stops the mouse from responding! I was hoping that having the recharge cable connected while the mouse in off mode would be a workaround for having to remember to turn the mouse off when I power down my PC.
