Sigh. Hope don't regret my HD555

Over the last few weeks I have just about driven myself insane over what pair of headphones to get, and while I really wanted a surround set I landed up going with the hd555's, as most people said that surround headphones did not really help with positioning in games.

The other choice would have been the Speedlink Medusas 5.1's with the amp.

Through all my searching I could not find anyone doing a direct comparison, having used both sets. Until now, 5 minutes after my hd555's arrive, I find http://techgage.com/article/speedlink_medusa_51_and_sennheiser_hd555/

And of course, for gaming the Speedlinks come out on top.

I have read about many people having problems with X-fi cards with the speedlinks, but I think that is probably only some and often down to the users.

I really was put off by all the people saying "you don't need 5.1 headphones for good positioning". But now that I think about it, I can't help but wonder how many of those people are purists, and how many have even given the surround headsets a try.

Right now I am wishing I had gotten the Medusas to try first. Hell, I think I might just go and order some right now and compare them directly myself, and to hell with all the guess work.

mmmmmm, jellly......

anyway, have replaced my X-Fi Extreme Audio with an Extreme Music and have connected up the headphones, and yes, they do sound lovely.

I just have one problem. The Extreme Music I have I got as a refurb and it did not come with a Creative disc. This means that there is some software I do not have for equalizer adjustments, etc.

Anyone know whereI can get this? Creative site does not have it and I am struggling to find it online.

Please help.

Ok, having given them a listen last night I would have to say they do work well for gaming.

Whereas something like the Medusas might be better for positioning in games, I was surprised how well the HD555's coped with it.

Had a nightmare time finding the Creative software suite, but have it now (bloat that it is) which I really only needed for upping the bass a little.

I am still not sure whether to use the cmss(sp?) and crystaliser. Need to play around with the software to try and find some one-click options for chaning modes and speaker setups, rather than having to go into Audio Console every time. I know the IO bay will allow me to just plug in headphones an detect them, but that is another £50.

Although I am not sure if everything sounds so good because have moved to an Etreme Music card, or because of the headphones. Probably both.

So yeah, think will stick with these headphones :D

PS - GRAW never sounded so good...

Hell, I knew there would be some leakage with these, but it's terrible. Even when the volume is not high I can hear it in the next room - you know that horrible tinny sound?
