Sigh, I can't tell which resolution I should be using :P (360)

Hmm.

I have a Samsung 223BW Screen, which is 1680x1050 resolution, but the xbox 360 obviously doesn't output at this resolution through the Official VGA cable.

The resolutions I am picking between are 1280x720, 1280x768 (16x9.6 ratio i think) and 1360x768.

I can't really tell the difference between the images, but I THINK (based on looking at the letter A when I was testing between them) that 1280x720 is the sharpest resolution. That seems weird, I thought, because the resolution is 16x9.

Which rez should I pick, it's doing my head in lol.

Regards

You probably want a 1280x768 ratio if the Xbox gives you that. It's the closest to the 16:10 your monitor is.

Yeh I was thinking that, but (it is hard to tell the difference, tho) it seems that the 1280x720 resolution is sharper.

Could the explanation for this be that the 360 outputs at 720p, but then ONLY my monitor is UPSCALING?

Whereas if I use a different resolution to 1280x720 on my xbox, both the Xbox AND the Monitor are playing a part in scaling?

Hmm. no idea how it works :P

Wish there was a way I could compare game pictures easily! Its annoying having to decide by looking at the picture quality of the dashboard haha.

Yes, that's a very good point actually. If you choose 1280x720, then the Xbox 360 is doing no upscaling at all - it's all in the hands of your monitor. A single scale in this case is probably better than the console having a go and then your monitor. Stick to 1280x720.

I'd've thought it reasonably easy for MS to simply add 1440x900 and 1680x1050 as options.

Just use what ever your comfortable with tbh, most games are rendered at 720p then scaled acordingly, although if I was in the same situation I would probably go for which ever was closest to your monitors aspect ratio.

Where are the characters in your sig from? Im sure I recognise it, but I cant put my finger on it

Edit: Was just going to suggest that the fall dashboard update is around the corner so they *might* add more resolutions now that LCD monitors are becoming more and more cheaper, thus more demand for the resolutions. But I agree its ridiculous they dont support them.

After much testing on my 2007WFP I've found that setting the xbox to 1280 x 1024 and then choosing the "widescreen" option actually gives the best picture on a 1680x1050 screen. It may not be the same outcome on your Samsung but it's worth checking out.

Interesting I will give that a go, but I am really confused as to why it seems 1280x720 is displaying better than 1280x768 or 1260x768 - then again it could be my eyes deceiving me!

The characters are from the Tsubasa Chronicles manga/anime by Clamp.

Specifically Fay on the left and Kurugane on the right.

Oh and I don't understand how the resolution becomes widescreen :P How does it convert it from 4:3 to widescreen

Hmm Tested 1280x1024. Seems that 1280x720 and 1280x1024 (in widescreen) are both sharper than the other resolutions.

Now I have to somehow decide between those 2 :P

1280*720 probably gives you the sharpest resolution because it's only being scaled once. The 360 naturally renders at 1280*720 and any other setting will just mean the 360 is scaling it to the selected resolution and then the monitor is scaling it again to the monitors native resolution, losing quality each time the image is scaled.

Hmm, in that case it means my monitor scales better than the 360? I guess I **** select 1280x720 then.

Well your monitor will always be scaling as none of the resolutions match your monitors native resolution. The idea is that at 1280*720 the 360 will not be doing any scaling at all so only one device will scale the image rather than both.

Hmm i now noticed that 1280x720 is Shaper, but only in certain areas of the screen; plus at the top of the screen there seems to be TOO MUCH sharpness (noticed when I read a few words on the dashboard).

As a result I've just punched my OCD self in the face and settled with 1280x768.

Lol.

Ah well, ill probably end up changing it again !

I have a similar monitor.

I found it looks best with the following settings:

1280x720 resolution.
Expanded reference levels
100 sharpness on monitor settings
100 brightness on monitor settings
80 contrast

Text...etc still looks a bit soft because it's not running at the native res (If you sit as close as you could when playing a PC game). If you sit away a few feet as you would playing a normal console game, it looks perfect.

Your sharpness is very weird, as I'm sure I've said before, as with most monitors you really don't want to be going above 50.

My settings are:
1360*768 (TV's native resolution so only the 360 is scaling and not the TV)
Expanded
50 sharpness
50 brightness
75 contrast
All image enhancers off.
