Sigh, I'm fps obsessed.

Hey guys,

My new setup is underway and is great, really loving the fractal nano s case!

Now my problem is I'm addicted to high fps :(

I mentioned air flow in another thread as my gpu is getting starved as the psu is hampering it a lot!

So I was considering changing to a blower style cooler at Christmas time..and want to know if a GTX 1060 is more than enough for high FPS at 1080p on high / ultra settings?

Or do I spend a bit more and get a 1070 as I am making my pc my main gaming rig now and will be investing in new AAA titles in the future..

Cheers guys, RTJ

Thats because you have been conditioned to think that >60fps is great, and really noticeable and essential.
It's not. 60fps is butter smooth. (unless you are a professional gamer).

Aim for 60fps minimum and you will be happy and your wallet will thank you.

I can't massively tell the difference between 60hz and 100hz on my Predator X34a

Do you play with a controller or mouse and keyboard? If you use a controller you'll notice the difference even less at higher framerates/hz because of the inherent controller latency.

Most people stop noticing more FPS after about 80.

You will notice a big difference going back to 60hz from 100+ though. Input lag is higher and it just doesn't feel or look as smooth.

You kidding my right? I have the same monitor. It's like night and day to me. Will never play in 60hz ever again. Hurts my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I always set it to 100hz and if I play an FPS with keyboard and mouse then I can notice it a bit

But I remember the first time I got the monitor, setting 100hz and thinking "Oh - Well that's hardly any different" and I use a controller a fair but for third person games and driving games, and because of controller input lag (approx 50-60ms on an Xbox One Controller) the extra hz doesn't make a huge difference.

The G-sync and Ultrawide is the best features IMO.

Same, I played with a 60Hz and upgraded to 144Hz monitor and the difference is very noticeable, but I think this really depends on the game, I play Overwatch a lot and it is fast paced and requires quick flick movements.

So yea, be obsessed :p

Not really. You generally sit very close to a monitor and the games are usually constant quick movements such as mouse flicks in FPS and fast scrolling in a game like Diablo. They eyes are very sensitive to this which is why the higher the FPS (and in correlation the refresh) the games feel nicer. You lose some image quality as a sacrifice especially with colours.

TV you generally sit back so your focus is wider. Tv is generally filmed at 30FPS so your 60hz tv is actually making the picture feel smoother with fancy tricks and generally TV is "slower" in its movements.

To me what is always noticeable is a change of FPS. Whatever the speed it just needs to be fixed at that. The other element is what kind of game it is. Some games are fine even down to 30 FPS, some you really want 60 FPS min

Very true very true. I well realise people can be more comfortable with higher Hz, but I just thought to say 60hz actually hurts eyes was a bit much. I mean how on earth did you game pre-60hz panels?

I had a 75 or 100hz CRT monitor :D

While 60z hz doesn't make my eyes bleed or anything, I do wear glasses and I find the lower refresh rates do make me tired. Interestingly as someone mentioned above the change in FPS is also a factor. 60hz Gsync is fine for me as it keeps things constant but I couldn't afford the rather high price tag so I went for the 144hz option.

does watching TV hurt your eyes?

Stuff on TVs are usually shot in 24FPS such as TV shows etc but go play at game at 24FPS and tell me that doesn't hurt your eyes. You can't compare the two. Basically your'e used to watching content on TV at 24FPS but say you got used to watching the same content but shot at 48FPS i bet for dam sure you wouldn't be able to go back to 24FPS.

I notice this when watching YouTube videos that are at 60FPS, they provide much greater detail and feel so much more fluid. Makes watching standard YouTube videos yucky.

The same goes for games. Yea sure games are nice between 45FPS to 60FPS which is where i used to aim for on my old 1080p 60Hz monitor until i got a 120Hz monitor and tried frame rates over 60FPS. I could instantly notice the difference and was introduced to a who new level of smoothness which i thought fixed 60FPS was. I always tried to aim for a locked 90FPS or above but with more modern games it made that hard and even more so now i have gone to 1440p. But anyone who tells me that there is hardly any difference over 60FPS/Hz i could not disagree with them more.

When i play the odd console game and they are around 30FPS i find it hard to play and it takes a lot of effort for me to get used to it. Most of the time i will accept it for the console exclusives that i love.

The reason TVs don't look awful at 24fps is they insert duplicate frames to hide the gaps between real frames :P

Up to you and the cash you have available.

I'd go 1070 and 120/144hz 1080p g-sync panel, unless you can afford a 1440p one.

60hz even on rpg games doesn't feel smooth anymore. Sweet spot for me is 100hz although I do sometimes wish my pg348q was 120hz as it is nicer for fast paced games.

1070 for high fps at 1080. high hz monitor for me or none since changing.

60hz once gaming on 120-144 is like walking through mud.some people can notice the high fps differences some cant.thats why some play consoles.:p
