Sigh, I'm fps obsessed.

GTX 1060 is great card for 1080P op. The GTX 1070 is even better though xD, plus if you move to 1440P or higher later on you will have a bit more wiggle room.

Highly recommend the GTX 1070.

It's like having the power of the Maxwell Titan X, in a cool / quiet, power efficient package xD

Thats because you have been conditioned to think that >60fps is great, and really noticeable and essential.
It's not. 60fps is butter smooth. (unless you are a professional gamer).

Aim for 60fps minimum and you will be happy and your wallet will thank you.

You really do make me chuckle :D Honestly, if you feel that way, you should just buy a console and be done with it. Go play on a 60Hz monitor and then play on a 120/144Hz monitor and tell me that the 60Hz was ultra smooth!

As for the TV comment, LMAO :D :D

Edit:

I remember playing Geoff Cramonds F1 on an Amiga 500 and it was totally awesome and ran at something crazy like 12 fps and then I went for a A1200 and it flew along (literally felt like it) at around 20 fps :D

That was fun times though and no bother.

Really bad and ill informed advice there.

OP, go for the 1070 if you can afford it.

I would recommend you don't use FPS overlay on screen.

If your constantly checking Fps you will notice slowdown more.
I used to keep it on but I'll only use it now if things feel slow.

I have a 60hz screen and I'm happy enough.
Screen tearing is a bigger problem for me.
Anything below 45fps and I can't aim properly in Fps games, I couldn't play fallout 4 at 30fps.

When I first played quake (non gl) I had to play in a window with awful textures. I preferred to have high Fps and awful graphics.

I can't massively tell the difference between 60hz and 100hz on my Predator X34a

Do you play with a controller or mouse and keyboard? If you use a controller you'll notice the difference even less at higher framerates/hz because of the inherent controller latency.

I 100% agree with you, I'm playing @144hz atm but tbh outside of CS:GO it could just as well be 60. And since I barely play CS:GO... Will definitely switch to 4K soon (even though that's overrated too, but the extra space is nice).

I, for a long time, have not been happy to run at 60hz (even back on the old CRTs I used to drop res for higher hz, preferably 100hz or a min 85hz because even 75 seemed jarring at the time). Having said that I cannot tell the difference between 120 and 144 and have found those extra hz can "wash out" the colours a little more than desirable (something I hear others mention too, but not sure is that just a tn panel trait?), so have resorted to running at 120.

I do kind of envy those that are happy to run at 60hz as I can see how it makes things easier to run with more "eye candy" settings while avoiding the frustrations of games with capped fps (or the undesirable effects if unlocked).

Thankfully there are setting that can be dropped, or lowered, in many modern games that I really dont care for or think add much IMO(mainly screen effects, high shadow settings and lighting etc), which help to achieve the desired fps. You are likey to have to do this with a few games with a 1060 too.

Now that you have experienced higher hz, I think you will find it hard to go back. In any case, I hope you enjoy your experience.

Seems like some people are more sensitive to refresh rate than others.

I can definitely notice 60hz vs 144hz. The effect on my eyes is noticeable as well.
120 vs 144, now that I cannot notice any difference.

As far as I am concerned, for longer term use, the higher the refresh rate, the better for your eyes.

@OP have you got a g-sync/adaptive sync screen? As that'll help a lot with the feeling of smoothness across FPS values, which is a big part of why people complain of stutter with lower FPS values - because there literally is stutter that isn't to do with the FPS itself but to do with the display having to display some frames multiple times but not others.
(Sorry I realise if you've just been building a rig you're probably already familiar with all of this, but worth asking just in case!)

Hey, yeah I have a monitor that has not got free / g sync, its a iiyama 27" but tbh i havent found much screen tearing or stutter in DOOM or CS GO, so in that department it is not too bad..so far..

I am in the process of convincing the parentals on a new GPU (GTX 1070) to allow for higher FPS and all round future proofing if i go 1440p in the future..if anyone else disagrees and thinks a 1060 would be sufficient, please let me know asap as i am to make a decision tonight / tomorrow on this..

thanks guys,

Absolutely everyone is different on how they perceive fps on a monitor and do mean everybody. A solid 60 fps 60htz for me is perfectly acceptable. Yes I can notice 100 htz and so on but it doesn't affect me or my eyes playing at a locked 60. If you have issues going from a 100/144 htz gsync back to a 60 htz then it's unfortunate. I've recently tried gsync 100 htz and to me the difference is there but it certainly doesn't bother me or makes me wish for 100htz etc etc. I'm happy with 60htz and my 1440p ultrawide and my set up will lock anything at 60htz. Eventually and hopefully all monitors will be high refresh rates and gsync type technology and not cost us a small fortune for it.

Right guys, change of plan AGAIN! Im ordering soon the ASUS TURBO GTX 1060 GPU. Please tell me this will be enough for most AAA titles at medium/high setting at 1080p?

I am not a detail whore as much as I am a FPS one :D

Why this one.? There are cheaper alternatives with better coolers.

Some people seem to miss the distinction between FPS and HZ, or just don't notice it, where for me it's horrendous. When I started the BF1 beta I was getting 80-100 FPS but it felt horribly juddery and not at all smooth. A quick look at settings revealed it was running at 60hz, the difference from 144hz was night and day. 60fps at 144hz is still fantastic, 60fps at 60hz is horrible.
