I have a macbook pro, which plays some games alright dual booted to windows.. and an xbox 360.. So I can play games without having a decent desktop... And I dont think theres anything coming out that im going to die if i dont play it..

So is there much of a performance bump in nehalem that makes it worth waiting for? Or shall I just buy some current hardware?

Its like every computer hardware related thing, you can either buy now then sell in a few months or pay the premium for brand new components when they're out. Its really up to you and whether you can wait until Nehalem is out or if you neede the system now.

Personally if your MBP is fine for now then I'd wait, if you find it struggling then maybe get something now :)

Woot, the magic 8 ball says buy now!

Better wait till these price cuts though so i can maybe get a q9550 :)

I asked if the nehalem was a worthwhile upgrade to my system and it told me "don't count on it"

So sticking with my current rig then ;)

i am in a similar predicament, should i wait or buy now?

I was about to press the buy button on qx9650 but with nehalem so close i think i will just get a q6600 and wait. Not worth paying £450 for a cpu when i can just spend it on a newer system for 4 months wait max.

QX9650 brand new?

Why spend all that money on the CPU? You can easily get a cheaper one to overclock to the same or faster speed

its almost impossible to get 4000mhz 0n air with acceptable volts on anything but the qx9770 or qx9650, unless you are lucky or use water cooling. Also i was planning on keeping the system for a year ot two at least.

i could not be bothered with water cooling or keep buying cpu and selling them on to find a golden chip.

but i think i will try a q6600 for 3600mhz.

My Q6600 which I sold recently did 4ghz under water so you can find the odd one which does it.
The price difference between the 9650 from a 6600 though is silly, especially for the performance.
Only things that you would notice a difference in for 3.6-4ghz would really be benchmarks. Everyday use I didn't notice a difference really between 3.6-4ghz.

Oh and my old Q6600 did 3.7-3.8ghz on air aswell so you might get lucky!

Even though Nehalem is scheduled sometime end 2008/start 2009 it will still cost a bomb when first released, plus you will need a new mobo and ddr3. Not cheap.

I'd just buy a reasonably decent quad-core system now (Q6600) and overclock the balls off it, then upgrade to Nehalem around this time next year if needs be.

Personally I wont be going Nehalem till Q4 2009 at the earliest.

I agree, I was also going to wait for Nehalem but thought the same as Chadd. So I have decided to upgrade now and get Nehalem in 2 years, already got my p35 mobo and 4GB of ram, just waiting for the Q9550 to drop in price

This still will be miles better then my current 4800+ x2 :)

Didnt u see the updated threads "Nehalem for September" ?

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17900808

2 of them about basicly Intel is launching Nehalem in September now along with X58 boards thats basily end of next month, but they do say proberly early October.

It makes sense anyone whos spending a good 1k+ on a decent rigg should wait imo, if you really gotta have it then of course just buy a pc now.

But just as you say why not go on flebay/For sales forums and use second hand+cheap parts and make a cheap Q6600 rigg :)

I may do that still cos frankly there hasnt been one game thats appeared in 2008 thats made me feel like buying an actual PC. Of course if DNF, COD5 or its Expansions, BF3 or Crysis Warhammer arrived or something amazing id upgrade in a heart beat :)

For now ill just watch the prices drop and perhaps go mad in the Fall 2008 with Nehalem.
