Sigma 100-300 first samples

Took my new Sigma 100-300 F4 out for a trial this morning. I didnt manage to get much due to the terrible light and persistant rain. :mad: I managed to shoot some ducks and geese and these two strange ducks are my favorites

Does anyone know whats going on this their heads??

Any comments welcome

I also shot this young swan, shortly after he had waddled up and stuck his beak inside the lens hood of my sigma which scared the life out of me!

These were taken with the non-DG version. I tweaked the levels and did a bit of nr on the background but no sharpening so I'm already very pleased with the sharpness of the lens. It should be even better when we get some sunlight and I dont have to shoot wide open all the time.
 
Whats your opinions on the build quality/handling/weight of it etc?

Only asking because I am looking to get myself one soon and trying to get as much feedback as I can, not that I need anymore convincing really. What camera are you running it on as well?
 
I'm looking at the 70-300 too, have looked towards the USM route
hopefully will purchase soon
we should have a sub £250 70-300 ish zoom shoot out...
get some feedback!

Slightly confused by your post...in your sig it already says you have the 70-300mm.

The lens being discussed here is the 100-300 F/4 by Sigma, which is HSM not USM :) It also would not fit into the sub-£250 budget.
 
Right as requested some more detailed thoughs.

As we had some sunshine today I decided to take my camera on an 8 mile country walk that happened to take in the RSPB HQ in Sandy. As I didnt take any kind of support my arms are now a bit sore! This lens can be used as a walkabout lens but probably not for more than a couple of hours without some support.

I was pleased with the ergonomics of this lens. The zoom ring is abit obstructed by the mount ring but I didnt really need to zoom in and out that much so no problem. My left hand sat naturally on the focus ring which is very useful if your trying to shoot birds amongst branches as the af doesnt know what to focus on. The balance isnt perfect on a 350d body but I intend to get a grip to resolve this.

As it was a nice day I decided to use the 1.4x extender all day and even hand-held this has produced some impressive images.

Im still going through the images but heres a couple, both handheld with 1.4x extender.

Only post processing has been slight tweak of levels and cropping
More to follow when ive been through them.

Any comments and suggestions welcome

understandable
yeah, was redoing my sig, was about to buy one then I got confused myself and looking around for the best I can afford
nearly went for a 70-200L F4
frankly it's all gone wrong, will probs get something cheaper now
and will update my sig properly then!
