I know it's a long shot but I was wondering if anybody on here has any experience with the Sigma on a D850? I rather liked the look of the Sport version but can only afford the Contemporary.

The latter link is impressive. I bought the lens but haven't had chance to use it. I don't remember the link but I came across a video comparing it to the Tameron 150-600 which showed the sigma to be considerably brighter No other video mentioned this. I did see the Jared Polin recommendation and so went by that. Thanks anyway.

Reasons to Buy the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary

  • Faster aperture in part of the zoom range
  • Much lighter
  • Almost half the cost
  • Zoom ring is much easier to adjust
  • Smaller and shorter
  • Focuses faster at the longer focal lengths
  • Tripod mount ring and foot are removable
Reasons to buy the Sigma 150-600mm Sport

  • Better build quality overall
  • Fully weather sealed instead of just a sealed mount
  • Built of metal instead of plastic
  • Includes a high quality lens hood

Sports has superior sharpness and is better all round but its a monster! I bought it and returned it as extending it on my sofa and realising it was about a meter long and weighed two tonnes, I decided I end up not taking it with me often enough to warrant owning it.,

The Contemporary is a good compromise.

That and the price is what convinced me to go with the Contemporary. Problem is I'm now after something with a fast aperture between 100-300 that I can afford which means a used Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (non OS). I can't find anything to match this at the same price (Nikon fit).

Owned the contemporary. If you really need the reach then it's a good lens but I was never really amazed at the sharpness and contrast/colours. It's very good. But if I wanted a lens now for airshows/wildlife/landscape etc. I'd get the Canon 100-400 mk2. I've wanted that lens for years and spent hours and hours and hours reading about it / watching videos etc. it just looks superb for everything as well as the optical stabilisation, and the fact that you can focus at 1m it can even do some macro.

I used my Contemporary lens for moon shots, wildlife, airshows etc. some birding, but I'm not really into birding. If you are then the extra reach would make more sense over the Canon.

Obviously what it lacks is the 400-600mm range and is more expensive though.

I'm also slowly getting used to the Sigma 120-300 f2.8
What I find odd about this is the way it "renders" sunlight. It's a tad neutral/white as opposed to a soft yellow- if that makes any sense.
