Mooching... in your house
I currently have on order a Canon 18-55 IS, 50mm ƒ1.8, and am thinking about extension tubes for macro... In terms of IQ, would it be a good move to ditch all three of these in favour of a Sigma 18-50mm ƒ2.8 EX? am I right in thinking the sigma would be better for standard walkabout than the 18-55 canon, better for macro than using tubes but not as good for low light as the nifty... Is that the head and tail of it?

Regardless of the macro...you are not going to regret buying the 50mm 1.8.

I have both the 18-55 kit lens and the 50mm with the cheap tubes. The 18-55 actually works VERY well with the tubes due to the 0.8ft focusing vs the nifty's 1.5ft.

The Sigma really would be a more favourable purchase however over the Canon due to the better optics and that it's a f2.8. It might be better to invest now in a slightly more quality lens than just the standard kit lens.

Fair enough :) the only reason I'm asking is that there is only 50 quid between the 2 above options but to get the fifty, the tubes, AND a superior walkabout is a lot more money...

never used either of those canons but i can vouch for the sigma.. concidering its pretty cheap compared to some constant 2.8 lenses it performs outstandingly.

I would get the Tamron 17-50 2.8 over the Sigma 18-50 2.8, the tamron has much better IQ according to most reviews.

The Sigma 18-50 is not a Macro lens though, it does not achieve 1:1 reproduction ratio so you will still need extension tubes, likewise for the Tamron.

If you want a portrait lens in the 50mm region look at getting a dedicated Macro lens like a Canon 60mm macro.

Personally if you think you will be upgrading again in future, save the money now and just wait until you can afford the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS. Much, much better quality lens!

think i'll put it on my list for lenses to buy next year :) - got a lot to learn first and i think the 18-55IS, 55-250IS & nifty fifty will be good starting blocks :)
