Sigma Canon EF 24-70mm Aspherical EX DG 2.8

hi, any1 got 1 of these or know anything about them ??, i've been on fredmiranda & its a bit of mixed bag. I'm looking for a walkaround lens for my holiday in menorca shortly, would this lens be ok, am open to suggestions, budget of £350 - £400

The most common recommendation around that length and for the money you're quoting is the Tamron 28-75 XR Di, which is rated by many as having IQ on par with the Canon L series, though the autofocus is nothing like as fast.
Note however that 28mm really doesn't achieve wide on a 1.6 crop camera, as it equates to around 44mm.

My personal view is that the 17-50 Tamron XR Di actually has better IQ than the 28-75, and is a better walk around lens with a 1.6 crop camera.

Is that the same lens as the Sigma 24-70 Ex DG Macro? They don't make a non-macro 24-70 I think. Also, I assume canon = canon fit.

If so, I think it's fab for the money, and quite versatile. The only downside to the lens is the fact that it's slow to focus (compared to USM lenses). The only other thing is the stigma of Sigma's quality control. Some of them can be a bit dodgy and focus incorrectly. I'd say it's important to test this as soon as you get it, and take it back if it's faulty. The shop should be able to replace it on the spot if you take it back within so many days (I think).

Both the mentioned Tamrons are miles ahead optically than the SIgma 24-70 2.8 ex dg macro - they are also far far quieter when focusing.

I had the 28-75 tamron and in manual focus mode you can get VERY closeup macro shots, 15cm from the subject was the norm at 75mm (sample below) and from what 17-50 tamron owners are showing in their smaples I can see that lens is just as good albeit wider but with less reach. If you have the kit lens then get the 28-75 because the kit lens is wide enough at 18mm and at below 24mm you will always want to stop down to around f4 or smaller to minimise the weakness of almost any given lenses wide angle image quality.

I found the 28-75 Tamron to be sharper than my 50mm 1.8 Canon @ 2.8 as well and of course you can get much closer than it too with 25mm more zoom which is always handy.
