Sigma flashes?

I'm looking to start building a strobe set for my 5D (Mk1) for my portraiture (and odd bit of macro) work. I could just about afford a single 430, but I kinda need someone to explain the difference between the two systems. Of course Canon customer support may be better, blah blah but I'm not horrifically worried about that.

Specifically I'm looking at the ef-610, given how cheap it is. The spec looks fine to me; but I assume there's something in the exposure control that's better about the Canon offerings?

Will two ef-610s work as a master and slave setup?

Can the Sigma flashes trigger Canon flashes or vice versa?

What are the differences between the "ef-610 DG ST electronic flash" and the "ef-610 DG super flash"?

Thanks for any help in advance :)

It lacks the level manual control you get with the 430 or othee high end flashes. You can only set it to full power or 1/16th, which may be limiting for strobe stuff.

The Super has a screen and a much greater level of control, all the way down to 1/128th power. It's also got wireless triggers built in.

I'm a total virgin with strobist stuff...

When you say it's got wireless triggers built in, would that mean that the normal one would need an extra receiver on the hotshoe to be fired wirelessly?

Also thinking about the power levels, could you not feasibly replicate a lower power output (to an extent) by just widening the zoom of the flash? (Or moving it further away but that's a bigger difference)

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions

How about a couple of Yongnuo 560's and the RF-603? Set you back only about £100 but very decent flashes, if it's anything like the YN-468 and going on the reviews.
Edit: And if you do want something with TTL, then get a YN-468 as well to complement the YN-560's.
