Back in Web 1.0, you could view most web sites without prompts.

A seemingly large proportion of web sites nowadays that don't require membership, actually ask you for a login. Is there a way around it? I just want to view the damn page lol :p P.S. I did go into developer tools and turn off Javascript but it breaks the site and asks me to turn JS back on. Bad coding imo as web developers should test different browsers, settings, OSes/platforms and screen resolutions.

I'm just wary that by clicking the G+ button (no FB/Twitter here), I open my browser / devices up to a plethora of unneeded tracking which would undo my Ghostery anti-tracking etc.

I could do Gilly, but I prefer to be logged in with my Gmail account at all times (which is of course tied in with G+ and other Google services). As for Facebook, not sure if you're allowed dummy/sockpuppet accounts on there?

you don't need a dummy facebook account, it lets you log in with any email.
how have you survived without a dummy account.
and while you are at it, usedlastpass to manage everything, and make secure passwords.

Pinterest is a site that I haven't worked out how to browse without logging in. My Ghostery, Request Policy and No Script combination seems to fail here so I can only conclude there is no way round it for that site. Therefore, when I end up there, I promptly press the back button.

they just want to harvest your info...

like teh airdroid app sign in with google then still says you need to make an account anyway.....

There's literally an option in your screenshot to create an account that isn't linking it to your Facebook or Google accounts.

I sign in with Google wherever possible since in 99% of cases, Google's authentication systems are going to be better than the website that is using them.

Use the dev tools to delete the overlay.

I've used dev tools, but how do you use it to delete the overlay (Mozilla Firefox)? It's an annoying feature on many Web 2.0 sites and I had a separate thread here for that a few months ago. It's kinda become the Web 2.0 version of pop-up ads and just as intrusive.

It's the principle though. If the search engine spiders can pick the images up (Google Images), then so should an un-logged in user?

Thanks, will have a gander at Lastpass :-)

am the same, every time I end up there, the need to log it means it gets closed right away

I didn't realise that these JS-based popups (the new scourge of the internet) are called overlays. So I did a bit of digging and found this which might be useful for Firefox and Chrome users:

Behind The Overlay.

It works perfectly against Pinterest! The drawback is that the add-on doesn't remember a blacklist of sites so you have to dismiss the overlay on each visit but it is a workaround for now. The perfect solution though would be for an add-on to remember a blacklist and dismiss the overlay automatically on future visits.

use adblock plus. click the icon at the top right of browser. select block element, highlight the section and bam it's gone forever. make sure you select the correct area as i just tried it and i selected what i thought was the overlay but it hide the background. if you do get the wrong bit it's easy to go into blacklisted section and unhide

Also works a treat on this forum. right click the advert images at the top and select block element. will give you back a precious 100px or so of space

Just don't forget your master password if you've got 2 step verification turned on and have lost your original phone. Codes didn't work from my new phone and the bloody thing took me ages to log in. Had to contact them and everything, which meant I couldn't log into anything at all until it was fixed. :o

In Firefox;

1. Right click on the page, select inspect element
2. Find the overlay in the markup
3. Right click and select "delete node'.

The overlay will very likely return on any subsequent page, but if it's only the first page you want you should be good to go.

Agreed with other posters about the likes of adblock though.
