Ok this is like BIZARRO styleeeeee.

We are kind of going through a mini house renovation at the moment at home. We've had the boiler replaced with a new up to date model, including getting new fireplaces in the living and dining rooms. THat was completed last week. On Saturday, a complete re-wire of the electrics started. Where we can get power from has been hit and miss all weekend as they are ripping cables out etc.

So basically, last night i got in bed, i have hurt my back from moving furniture around and it was really hard for me to sleep. One difference from the past like 3 years is that i didn't have a fan blowing on me. Thats right, every night for the past 3 years i have had a 16inch fan on full blast that points at me in the night - even when its freezing cold at winter. This was the first night in them 3 years that It hasnt as the 2 working power sockets were taken up by the boiler, and the TV downstairs on an extension.

So i spent an hour in bed tossing and turning, couldnt get comfy. My back was doing my head in (still is :/ ) and I thought "christ, im not gonna sleep at all 2nite and be ratty as hell at work in morning). Then i thought ZOMFG i cannot handle this, so in a last effort to get to sleep i unplugged the boiler (who needs hot water in the night anyway? :p ) and Plugged my fan in. Instantly, i i felt so much more relaxed. I closed my eyes and could feel myself settling down and getting drowsy. After that I dont remember any awakeness so I assume I must have fallen straight to sleep.

I wasn't hot in bed before i put the fan on, and without my covers i am freezing with the fan on. But could it be that I have slept for approx 3 years with the noise of a 16inch fan blarring out all night - and then suddenly that noise is gone, and the silence so bad that I just cannot sleep?

GET WHAT I MEAN?

Buy a white noise generator - they're great for sleeping.

...And I'm sure it would use a hell of a lot less power than a bloody huge fan.

So they make devices that generate white noise to aid people to sleep? I did not know that, very very interesting.

So would it be actually plausable to say then that it is the lack of noise from the fan that made me feel irritable in bed?

Why did you have a fan running for 3 years if you didn't need it? I can (vaguely) understand that you find it difficult to sleep without some background noise now but surely for the past 3 years you've not needed a fan every night?

I have 2 notebooks as my computers that never get loud enough.

So, the fact that I cannot sleep without background noise of some sort, is that a medical condition?

I always sleep with a fan turned on because I have tinnitus and I would rather hear the fan :) Plus it blocks out other low level noise. It isn't unusual by any means. Apparently Wayne Rooney sleeps with either a hoover or a hairdryer turned on every night.

My room always gets hot (or used to) as the old boiler tank used to be in there and it was always stuffy in bed.

I'm the same.

It can take me upto an hour of trying to get to sleep, unless I have some sort of noise - whether it's a radio, or watching a movie, I just can't sleep with the no sound. :(

For tinnitus sufferers, they say an untuned radio halps (essentially white noise). Use a pillow speaker to supply the sound :)

I just put my head on the pillow when I want to sleep and....fall asleep.

Woot.

What is this, normal behaviour? With your reputation, you'd better be careful :p

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same in that I can usually fall asleep regardless of what is happening unless it is too warm.
