so ive just built the inlaws a pc using old bits i had knocking about, its only going to be used for net browsing and maybe the odd film, the thing is that the 9800pro ive put into it is being a right noisey lil bugga, ive cleaned all the sink up and oiled the fan but no joy

im wondering if taking the fan off and just leaving the sink on with some newly applied MX2 paste will be enough to stop it over heating ?

surely a bit of net browsing wont over heat the card if i unplug the fan ?

I have sat next to me an old AGP 9800 Pro which is one of the Silent Atlantis editions IIRC, It has been dead a long time but the cooler is very neat,

I might be able to send it to you if you're interested? But I'm very busy atm.

EDIT - 1 screw missing though :(

that would be cool (pun intended) :D

which screw , the ones holding the cooler on ?

If it's just for net browsing you might be best advised to put out a shout for a second hand passive card, something really old for a few quid would be ideal.

there were a few 9xxx series replacement heatsinks back in the day, i think i had a artic cooling one, looked similer to a modern gpu heatsink, but was quieter :). the lil fan's do make a awful wracket sometimes...

sent you an email taken

with regard to the cooler thats on it now , do we think it will fry the card if i leave the fan unplugged ?
