Continuing on from my earlier thread ...

I am essentially wanting to build a quiet AMD PC. Here is what I have in mind at the moment:

AMD A10-6800K Black Edition 4.10GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Quad Core Processor
Shall I use the stock CPU cooler?
MSI A85XA-G65 AMD A85X Chipset
Fractal Design Define Mini Series Micro ATX Case
BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W '80 Plus' Power Supply
Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic
Any 16g (8GBx2) 1866MHz memory sticks.

Main concerns are:

  • Using triple monitors. The M/B and CPU combo seems to support this.
  • Noise because of the processor — TDP 100W. Hopefully the case should dampen a lot of the noise ... ?
  • Is the PSU overkill? At most, I will fit 1. another large SSD, 2. two other regular HDDs, 3. Install a single GFX card.

If I get an "advanced" CPU cooler would I need to buy the thermal compound ... ? What else would I need?

Can you just inform me on what the use of the PC is?

You want to run 3 monitors? Are you gaming atall and if so on how many?

Any reason for the 16GB (that seems a bit of a mis-match, as its only really needed foir video editing and your rig is way under powered for that).

For silence an aftermarket cool is needed and yes most (if not all) come with paste..

Mostly programming. I just want an high-end machine. I do not want to get Intel either cause I feel like the AMD will do just fine.

I find it easier to work with three monitors. I won't really be gaming to be honest, and if I do, I'll just do it on one of the monitors.

I have 16GB on my machine at work. The more the better. It's also got a i7 870 @ 2.93GHz. I am hoping the AMD will offer similar performance.

So you're saying I wouldn't need to buy the paste as it would come with the cooler? I'll of course double-check myself.

Thanks,

The 6800K isn't a high end processor, it's designed for budget gaming/family systems really. If you'd prefer AMD, you'd be much better off getting a 6300 or 8320, and a graphics card that suits (e.g. a 7770 is fine for gaming). You'd have to go with ATX rather than micro-ATX though.

I think I'd rather stick with an micro-ATX, and not buy a separate GFX card at this point in time. This is one of the reasons why I am going for the AMD A10-6800K.
Do you have a recommendation for a cooler?

Also, is it worth considering a much smaller case? This would be great. My main concern is noise, but something that is a bridge between the two would be perfect.

If you want to stick with the APUs you can save a bit with the 5800K - it performs almost exactly the same. The Coolermaster Hyper 212 is a good inexpensive cooler. There are mini-ITX options as well.

PCs under normal load tend to be near silent these days.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you think of a good MB, that can do triple monitors, PSU and Case (with noise dampening) that would house the 5800K/6800k and Coolermaster Hyper 212.

In a word, no. stock AMD coolers are rubbish.

I have this cooling my A10-5700 & its is whisper quiet.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Noctua NH-U9B SE2 CPU Cooler £44.99
Total : £54.89 (includes shipping : £8.25).

TBH I'd go for a Trinity rather than Richland. I've used both & the main difference is the Richland runs much hotter, even at stock speeds, about 8 - 10 Degrees difference.

I take it you won't be overclocking in a silent build.

You'd be better off with the

same chip, less power, heat, noise
Looks interesting. Thanks.

I think I might end up getting the Cooler Master HAF XB as the case and the mentioned motherboard - MSI A85XA-G65 AMD A85X. Would I have issues fitting the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 CPU Cooler?

no need for a £50 cooler on a chip like that and 120mm tower will do fine

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Points that remain so far:

  1. Are there any mini ATX boards that has triple monitor support?
  2. CoolerMaster Hyper 212 is overkill for what chip? The 6800k or A10-6700?
  3. I am quite flexible on the case front, all I require is something small and quiet.

If I cannot find a mini ATX board that has triple monitor support, I will just get the board and case mentioned previously; MSI A85XA-G65 AMD A85X and Cooler Master HAF XB. Hopefully, I won't run into issues fitting the CoolerMaster Hyper 212.

1 - I linked to one above
2 - Both. It's an excellent cooler, overkill is the wrong word though. He means it can cool these APUs with consummate ease
3 - No idea about small cases, sorry. Personally, on looks alone, I would go with a Fractal Design Mini. I've got an XL and an R3, they are very quiet and the looks really do it for me

Lastly, you need 160mm from socket to side panel. Most cases quote max cooler height, so as long as it's 160mm or more, it will be fine
