Silent ATI AGP graphics card needed

I'm building a HTPC, and need a graphics card to go in it, as unfortunately I can't use the onboard VIA chip on my shuttle. It's an AGP board, so it'll have to be an AGP card. I've got a nvidia 6800GT but the problems are that (a) it's loud and (b) it really doesn't play well under linux (like a lot of nvidia stuff).

All I'm after is an ATI (good linux support) card that is very quite and fits in a single AGP slot. I appreciate that this might not be available new now and might be a s/h job, but any suggestions about what might fit the bill?

I thought Nvidia worked better under Linux?

Do you have room for an Accelero S1?

ATI have just open sourced their drivers, and I cannot for the life of me get the nvidia to work. I'll have another go tonight though. Even if I do, it's still a noisy thing. The AGP slot is right at the bottom of the board next to the case, so I doubt that anything that takes up more than the single slot will fit.

Won't exactly fit in a single AGP slot.

I know my thread title said ATI, but I'm reconsidering nvidia on the basis that it was late when I tried to get it working. I don't really want to spend a lot as it's just going to be playing films - the main reason for a spearate gfx is to power the opengl xbmc, which the onboard can't do.

I've found a b grade fanless nvidia 7600GS for about £45 - are these any good?

Yea the 7600GS would be fine for your purpose. Even the 7300 range were good cards.

I'd have a look for AGP versions of the low end HD2xxx range from ATi. They have inbuilt HD support and should be quite cheap.

Well, I bought the 7600GS I was looking at, only to be told that they weren't in stock after all. Looking around, these things are *rare*.

Still, I'll keep looking. There's a few 6200s floating around, might pick one up.

Ive been looking round for a AGP card for Bluray in my HTPC, theres not much to choose from even in the S/H market, be careful about getting any of the ATI 2400, 2600 series cards ive heard nightmare stories about them.
Luckily for the time being ive ripped the loud fan totally of my 6800GTS and ive put a 90mm fan at the side of it as my case is big enough.

Im waiting for/IF!! the 3650 at £80 comes down in price..
