The stock cooler for this cpu is quite noisy.

Could someone please recommend a quiet or if possible a silent one for this, if there is one.

Cheers

If you have the money a TRUE black cooler and a noctua NF-P12 fan, the fan is silent if you use one of the adapters it comes with.

Great cooler, the one in my sig. Significantly cheaper than the TRUE*, can't fault it. Or the non LED version for a quid or so cheaper.

*Better cooler to a couple of degrees, but twice the price when adding a good fan.

This Thermalright TRUE Black cooler. I assume as no fans are pictured it does not come with any. Does it need fans or a fan or can it be used without?

Eeek looks a tad LARGE

I use Xigmatek HDT-S1283, with Cool n Quiet enabled it is pretty much silent. Also performs really well with regards to cooling and cheaper than TRUE.

I've just purchased that cooler to replace my Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro (I had to cut lumps out of that one to get it to fit over the tall Corsair RAM fins)
The S1283 certainly looks the part and I've heard good things about it.

:(
I just found out that the Xigmatek cooler doesnt fit in my rig, the spring clip is the wrong way round for my motherboard (Asus M3A79-T Deluxe), meaning that the CPU exhaust would be blowing straight up or down, not towards the case rear exhaust fan like the Arctic cooler.

Here is a bad illustration

This is rubbish :(

PWM on? Should be a setting in the BIOS to vary fan speed according to temps.

Recommend the AC Freezer 64 Pro. The fan is 4-pin PWM type & at roughly 1920RPM is silent ;)

just a question about your phenom, are these processors good? i had a phenom early this year, it was 2.3GHz and was absolutley awefull! performance wasnt great for gameing and it wouldnt overclock atall! what are these newer chips like?
