"Silent" graphics cards

Yes, passive ones are totally silent but this really isn't a effective way of cooling such a component unless case airflow is really good and it kind of negates the point of having a quiet 3d card if you have performance (thus noisey) case fans. Fans ALWAYS make some noise however quiet they are. Your best bet would be buying a 6800gt or similar and fitting it with a Zalman vf900 as these are VERY quiet.
 
Wow, you must have read my mind ref the 6800GT. Thanks for the advice about the fan. I presume you mean replace the card fan with the Zalman ?
 
I'm gonna be forced down the PCI route I think as I will be replaced my Mobo a the same time. I note that Overclockers don't seem to have any 6800GT for sale
 
keep an eye in the b-grade section, I got one a few days ago MSI 6800GT AGP with the bigger copper cooler and fan speed adjust £87 plus del :)

perfect solution for my 2nd Shuttle
 
Zalman VF900 is a great cooler, to me it was inaudible at 5V and cooled fantastically.

Thanks again chaps. Good info indeed. Is their another code for the Zalman VF900? Again I can't see them for sale here under that code
 
I've always found the Zalman Heatpipe VGA coolers (such as the ZM80D-HP) to be excellent.

In some cases the, already quiet, OP-1 fan is optional.
My GeForce4 Ti4200 used to run totally passive :)

My 9800Pro used to run great with the OP1 fan, and seemed to be OK without it (although I installed the OP1 as the heatsink got very hot)!

Now I'm looking at getting another one to cool my X850 XT.
 
Thats an impressive range of coolers, thanks Rob. I now have a plan and would prefer to get everything off OC so I will ask them when they are getting any 6800GT's in.
 
Just read on a web site that I randomly found that the 6800GT is no longer being produced, hence the shortage ? If thats the case what is/has it been replaced by ? OC only stock 1 x 6800 card which is a 6800 XT Extreme. is this similar to the GT ?
