I'm looking for a cheapish, silent graphics card for my new system. I'm not a gamer but occasionally have a game on the original Unreal Tournament so anything that will handle that should be fine. (which I'm pretty sure all cards these days will!)

Currently I've got a Gforce 6600XT (AGP) so anything that's equivalent or faster would be good. Must be as quiet as possible, ideally silent.

I've been out of touch with GFX for years as you can tell so any help is appreciated.

Cheers

If you can find one at the right price then the X1950Pro with the Accellero S1 is a decent compromise on cost, performance and is absolutely silent.

If your only interested in playing UT then a 8500GT might be ok, it will struggle badly in newer games though.

X1950 Pro with an S1. Sapphire do a pre-fitted one called the SCS3 if you don't want to fit it yourself.

ASUS and Gigabyte do a lot of fanless variants of GeForce 7 (and some low-end 8 series) cards, anything equal to a 7300GT or higher will give you better performance.

Both these cards are silent (fanless) solutions...

This is the one i would go for, much better than your current card & better than the above suggestions....

or there is this ...

also a good card & whilst not as quick as the above it is cheaper.

I seen a passive 8800GT or GTS 512 the other day, hmm cant remember Vendor.

Edit : " Sparkle unveils passive-cooled 1GB GeForce 8800 GT "

" It's that time of the day again, when yet another GeForce 8800 GT card with 1GB worth of memory gets announced. We have Sparkle to 'blame' for not going to lunch but as it is a special release unhealthy food can wait, especially as it's not every day that a passive-cooled G92 card gets released. Yes, Sparkle's newest card, the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB Cool-pipe 3 features both 1GB of GDDR3 memory (at stock clocks) and a nice passive cooler meant to keep things quiet.

Set to 'default' frequencies, the new Sparkle card offers all the performance benefits of the 65nm G92 chip and does that without making any fuss about it although it will surely require some decent case cooling. "

The most taxing (and only) game I play is about 10yrs old so surely it'll be ok? Is the 8500 not better than the 6600 that I have at the minute?

yes it is better that the one you have, but I would go a little better, as it will not ruun modern games if you ever decide to have a dabble on them :)
sorry about the previous post, my mrs was shouting at me to get a move on to go to a family do ;)
