Silent i7 CPU Cooler?

I have the intel stock i7 cooler which is, according to tech reviews, the quietest of all the coolers for i7 available. I'm however, finding it can get extremely loud e.g. when copying files or when the cpu is working. I don't understand why the tech reviews all say intel stock cooler is the quietest. But I guess I should trust that they are correct? Sure it is quiet during idle. But when working, boy does it blow!

I'd like to get a silent i7 cpu cooler. Is there such a thing without a fan and just passive cooling?

I don't need to overclock it, just make it silent.

Thanks

Cripes, where did they say this? I feel like posting angry things at them.

Due to the massive TDP of the i7, a passive cooler is not really feasible. However, the Prolimatech Megahalems is a great cooler and is made for quiet cooling - its wide fin arrangement works great with slow spinning fans. If you couple it with one of these fans and use the Black voltage reducer (it comes with the fan) then you will have some very quiet cooling on your i7. If you feel brave, you can try the Blue voltage reducer which reduces fan speed (and noise) even more.

I would strongly suggest you run a stress test like OCCT for a few hours after the new cooler is installed - so you are happy with the noise of the new cooler at full speed - and that it is keeping the CPU sufficiently cool when under maximum stress.

Other than buying new cooling equipment, another good way to make the fan silent is to control its speed, so get a fan controller.

A good idea in theory, but I think the heatsink might have a few problems if you reduce the fan output.

At least on mine the cooling is pretty marginal even with the fan going full speed.

Guys,

Will any of these do the trick?

Scythe Orochi Rev.B Ten Heatpipe CPU Cooler (fanless)
Scythe Ninja II Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (fanless)
Coolink Corator DS Gapless Direct Touch Quiet CPU Cooler

Any would, but they would all require a fan of some kind, my peronal preference would be the Akasa Nero S.

It's fairly cheap (£35), nicely made and comes with a PWM controlled Apache fan (600-1600rpm) which are very quiet <1200rpm while still doing a good job.

Hi guys, I got the Scythe Mugen rev. B after a recommendation, and it's great so far. 15 degrees cooler than the stock cooler. Still trying to work out how to alter the fan speed though. Fan speed is set in the BIOS, but I have the ASUS P6T SE, so when I set it to 'Q-FAN AUTO CONTROL', it keeps the fan nice and quiet. Great. However, it brings up an error on boot "CPU fan error" because the fan is too efficient for the Bios to recognise!!!!! i.e. it keeps temps so low that the BIOS tells the fan to go slower.. and the BIOS can't understand why the fan is going so slow. Need to fix this somehow. There must be a manual fixed fan speed control in the bios, I'm searching for it.
