Hi there got a few quid together (50) and would like so quieten my case i have an x1800xt with stock cooler and a freezer 64 for the 939 AMD cpu. these are the loudest parts of my case i also have on amber fan but would need another what would you suggest i replace them with to make as silent as possable as the pc is on more or less 24/7 near my bed.

Cheers guys and gals much appricated.

Don't change the case - change the cooler on the X1800XT. The Freezer 64 should not be loud either. If you need the machine on 24/7 then consider moving either the PC or your bed.

or...

Don't laugh - but get 2 big cardboard boxes. The first to fit over the PC, the second big enough to fit over the first cardboard box. That should give all the sound insulation you need. Do get boxes with small hand-hold holes in them though otherwise the PC could overheat.

As Walter says, change the cooler on the X1800XT. A Zalman VF700 or VF900 will work wonders. Then you'll be able to hear the next loudest part and deal with that....

It doesn't need masses of air flow. A few holes in the card boxes with a chimney in the top will be fine. It's going to be in this state when he's asleep, so the room will be cooler anyway. I did this once when I had to sleep next to a Comms PC which had 4 80mm LOUD fans in it. I got a cardboard box and a tea-chest and put them over it. It wasn't silent, but it was significantly less noisy.

Get yourself a Zalman VF900-LED Quiet Copper VGA Cooler for the x1800xt and a couple of 120mm Noctua Case fans.

I have an Antec P180 and just built another PC in a Lian-Li PC7+

The P180 supposed to be really quiet. The Lian-Li PC7 looks great but is not a 'quiet design - pretty basic design.

In practice - they are equally quiet. As judged by being under my desk and can barely hear either.

Key is choosing quieter components. 120 fans. Quiet coolers on CPU and graphics card. Have case fans speed controlled so they are not roaring at 2000rpm when they don't need to be.
