Morning,

Looking to upgrade my PSU in my PC to a silent model, I've currently got a Cooler Master 'Silent Pro' Modular 500W PSU (but it's not in any way silent) which has been great for the past 3 years, but it only just fits in my new Silverstone ML04 case and is a bit too loud.

The case states the PSU should be no deeper than 14cm, I'd also like modular to avoid any excess cables and it must be silent. The current PSU is 15cm and it's a stupidly tight fit.

I was looking at the Corsair RM450 and 650 but they appear to be 16cm deep so no good.

PC is used as a HTPC, has an SSD, HDD, Blu Ray drive, i5 Haswell CPU and not much else so no need for a powerful PSU.

Also to clarify - I'm counting the 14cm depth as the distance between where the plug the power cable in to where the modular cables go.

Had a look at some reviews for it and it probably won't be as quiet as you want, as it has a high RPM 80mm fan. Pity because this thing is small (100mm deep).

Alternative 140mm deep (semi-)modular PSU:

1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020058-UK) £37.99
Total : £47.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Hmmmm I don't think either of those are going to be quiet enough. I want something that is going to basically be perfectly silent (unless under very heavy load - which the PC never does anyway).

You could always replace the fan on your current PSU?
Will void the warranty etc, but could be a decent solution.

How hard is this? I'm not bothered about the warranty but thought opening up a PSU would be a bit too much. No problems with spending the money required to get a new one.

Depends on the PSU as some might have either a funny fan header or an odd-sized fan. I did it to the PSU in my HTPC and it was easy.

Just don't touch the capacitors with your fingers and you'll be fine :)

Cooler Master website says:

Fan - 135mm ultra silent fan

http://www.coolermaster.com/service/support/model/RS-500-AMBA-D3/

If you can source a 135mm fan it may be worth it, bit of an odd size though.

BeQuiet 400w is 15cm, but will be silent.

That BeQuiet one looks ideal but it needs to be modular really as I don't have the space in the case for a load of extra cables :

How about the Be Quiet Pure Power L8 530W

Width 15 cm
Depth 16 cm
Height 8.6 cm

Is the dimension I need to look at the width or depth? As 15cm (width) will just about fit, but 16cm (depth) won't.

Corsair CS550M looks ideal (14cm, modular) but not totally silent.

If you really want silent there are a few Seasonic models that run passive upto about 250watt (on the 860watt model) in hybrid fan mode and are silent to quiet when the fan does come on.

Unfortunatly I don't know what the dimensions are but this is one possibility http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-027-SS&groupid=701&catid=123 though the hybrid fan mode isn't quite the same as on the platinum models.

EDIT: Apparently its 15cm x 8.6cm x 16cm :S
